The 14th International Conference on Biomedical Ontologies (ICBO 2023) aims to bring together representatives of all major communities involved in developing and applying ontologies in the biomedical field. Ontologies can help the cognitive artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) model by broadening the scope of its application. Considering this approach, ICBO 2023 theme is "The Role of Ontologies in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning".
We will offer a forum for recent work in the development and applications of biomedical and biological ontologies, mainly for Ontology-based AI or ML applications.
Main Conference Website: https://icbo2023.ncor-brasil.org/index.html
ICBO 2023 will be held in joint with the 16th Seminar on Ontology Research in Brazil – ONTOBRAS 2023
Submission Guidelines
Deadline June 07, 2023.
ICBO 2023 is inviting scientific papers and extended conference abstracts. In addition to the invited talks, the program committee and the workshop organizers will be inviting a selected number of papers for the plenary sessions and poster exhibition. As the 14th conference in the ICBO series, we welcome both returning and new attendees.
- All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. Submissions should be written in ENGLISH. All submissions will undergo peer review by experts in the field.
- All submissions should be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and should follow the CEUR-ART template, single column. Microsoft Office Word, Open Office, and LaTeX templates can be downloaded at: http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-XXX/CEURART.zip
The following paper categories are welcome:
- Full papers: from 8 to 12 pages (Including references).
High-quality papers on a wide range of topics with a focus on consolidated research contributions in ontologies. Contributions to theoretical, technical, and practical research that deal directly or indirectly with the areas listed below may be even more specialized. They can also be works by advanced students whose dissertations or theses are in the final stage and were not completed on the submission date but already show substantial results.
A scientific paper may describe a major advance in the field of biological and biomedical ontologies. It can report and/or discuss a new ontology, a major revision or extension to an existing ontology, new applications of an existing ontology or a potentially new ontology, a substantial critique of an existing ontology with a proposed alternative approach, the result of applying an ontology - for example, ontology-based artificial intelligence machine learning solutions, data interoperability, data sharing, big-data analysis, high-throughput methods, novel analytical reasoners, annotated resources, etc. Minor additions and/or refinements to an existing ontology are not appropriate. A scientific paper may also describe the thorough analysis of foundational issues in biological and biomedical ontologies without the requirement for a use case or specific application domain. Advancements and innovations in the field benefit from theoretical analysis and discussion.
- Short papers: up to 7 pages (Including references).
An early career track paper describes mentored work in the field of ontology carried out by a student (undergraduate and graduate), post-doctoral fellow, or junior faculty (within 5 years of appointment), who must be the first author on the paper. This paper category allows early career ontologists to benefit from constructive criticism, feedback, and advice from a broad audience of senior scientists and practitioners in the field. Selected early career papers will be promoted to the conference's main track while still being designated as having come through early career submissions.
- Poster Abstracts: 1 page extended abstract format, with limited references. (Posters session will be just in-person).
A poster abstract describes formative work, early or preliminary results, late-breaking developments, minor refinements to existing ontologies, proposed or planned applications of ontologies to particular use cases, and the opportunity to showcase mature work in a visual format.
- Describe all parts of the project/study, including why the outcome did or did not work as expected.
- The following poster structure could be used: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, References, and Address for Correspondence.
- Posters will be A1 in size, and further guidelines for preparing your poster will be shared to those accepted.

Notes: Limit of pages include references. For each paper accepted, at least one author must register.
