Introduction
If information is thought of as answers to questions, information systems should provide a means of asking and answering questions. Yet for GIS, there is a lack of theory as to what such questions are and how they are best answered. This workshop uses core concepts of spatial information as a conceptual basis for spatial questions and computations, explaining specific hypothesis of the types of spatial questions that can be asked, and how they can be answered computationally. It will explore a question-based approach to spatial computation and attempt to reach consensus on core computations of spatial information suitable for question answering. The key idea is to lift spatial computing to the level of conceptual models of the world, hiding the complexities of data models from the user as much as possible.
Submissions
We are looking for submissions of position papers about real world spatial problems and associated questions that can be answered using a GIS. Participants should discuss approaches to transforming these questions into a set of core operations. We also invite submissions that describe recent research that fits the general theme of question-based spatial computing. Position papers should not exceed 1500 words. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
-
Spatial analysis questions and spatial computations
-
Spatial queries and their real world interpretation
-
Conceptual design of (core) spatial computations
-
Challenges in question-based spatial computing
-
Suggestions for core concepts and computations
