The Society for Decision Making under Deep Uncertainty (DMDU) is a multi-disciplinary association of professionals working to improve processes, methods, and tools for decision making under deep uncertainty, facilitate their use in practice, and foster effective and responsible decision making in our rapidly changing world. While we share interests with other societies, ours is unique in its focus on developing, disseminating, and using these new approaches.
Since 2013, DMDU has hosted annual meetings to share recent project work, discuss challenges, and demonstrate state-of-the-art tools and techniques. Attendance is intentionally capped around 150 people to foster close and dynamic interaction among our diverse membership. This event, as with previous DMDU meetings, will be organized around interactive sessions that share DMDU knowledge, problem framing, applications, and tools.
This year, our 2018 meeting will be held in Southern California, hosted by RAND Corporation and Culver City. The meeting will emphasize the role of DMDU in decision making with respect to urban systems and emerging technology. We also hope to use this meeting to encourage connections among the DMDU community and new partners in Latin America and the Pacific Rim.
Submission Guidelines
A call for abstracts is now open. While abstracts on any DMDU-related themes are welcome, special consideration will be given to those focused on applications of DMDU methods and tools in the topical areas of urban systems and emerging technologies, or focused on applications in the geographical regions of Latin America and the Pacific Rim.
Abstracts may be submitted for:
- Oral presentations (10-15 minutes)
- Poster presentations
- Tools or models for a showcase session
- Problem-oriented sessions, which typically include brief presentations followed by structured discussions or activities designed to address problem framing and/or common or emerging challenges in applying DMDU
Abstracts will be accepted until 24 June 2018. We welcome questions regarding topics for potential abstracts or sessions.
The meeting committee is currently working to secure sponsorships, and travel funds may become available for select participants whose work strongly aligns with the annual meeting's goals. Please consider submitting even if you are uncertain about your ability to pay for travel.
Venue
This year’s meeting will be held in Southern California, 14-15 November 2018, and will be hosted jointly by the RAND Corporation and the local government of Culver City, California.
Prior to the two-day meeting, there will be a Training Day on 13 November 2018, designed to provide grounding in DMDU concepts and core methods. It is intended for those who wish to conduct DMDU analyses as well as decision makers who may receive the output of such analyses.
