Call for Contributions
The Dementia Lab Conference 2022 will take place on the 20, 21 and 22 September 2022 and will be hosted by the LUCA School of Arts, Inter-actions Research Group with support by the University of Leuven (KULeuven) Faculty of Arts. The theme of the Dementia Lab Conference 2022 will be the residue of interaction and will look at the value participation (working together with people with dementia) has on design across three levels: persona, product and organisational level.
We welcome everyone to contribute to the conference from their professional or personal experiences. To facilitate this, we offer different forms of contributions for Dementia Lab 2022. We allow the submission of full academic research papers (published by Springer), poster presentations, exhibition, workshops, and personal stories. For each of these opportunities, the appropriate templates, guidelines and submission dates are available below.
Visit the Call for Submissions page for more details.
Full Academic Paper - April 1
Full academic papers report and reflect on (design) research for and together with people with dementia. These papers contribute to the development of methods, material characteristics, field studies, or evaluation and critical reflection on ethics, participation, etc. of design for people with dementia. To ensure the academic quality of the contributions, we facilitate a double-blind peer review process with people experienced in this domain and accepted full papers will be officially published by Springer with DOI.
Submission guidelines full paper:
- All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference.
- Papers will be double-blind reviewed. The author and affiliation sections of the springer template must be left blank.
- Papers should be submitted in the springer template in PDF format.
- Papers must be between 2500-5000 words excluding references.
All full academic papers must be submitted electronically via EasyChair:https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dl2022

Call for Workshops - 31st of May
Workshops will provide the opportunity for participants to interact and discuss with each other on particular topics related to design and dementia. Led by a designer or researcher, the workshops will include methods such as mapping, clustering and collective brainstorming though workshop organisers are welcome to submit their own way of working. At the moment the intention is to hold all workshops in person, not digitally. However, due to travel costs, etc. virtual workshop submissions will also be considered. Workshops run for 3 hours. The number of workshop proposals is limited by the time available and the facilities. Workshop proposals will be evaluated according to the quality of the workshop experience for participants and the level of interaction the workshop will provide for those participating.
Workshop submissions should include:
- Title
- Motivation (purpose or intent of the workshop)
- A tentative programme
- Format (online/offline)
- Required materials, tech or assistance
- A plan for privacy considerations (if documenting the workshop with photos or video)
- Number of participants
- Indicate if the workshop is physical (face to face) or digital/virtual

Call for Demos and Exhibition Participation - 31st of May
This year’s exhibition will fall under the title of Material Conversations. While most exhibitions focus on artefacts (whether these are called demo’s, art pieces or design objects) this exhibition will highlight the story that these processes, interactions and artefacts represent. The exhibition will highlight quotations (what people said about dementia symptoms, situations etc. ) that will be created into “supergraphic” to be clustered and displayed with related objects and imagery (photos, sketches, etc.). Please refer to the page detailing this further here.
Participants proposing a submission to material conversations must include:
- Quotations coming from family, carers and/or people with dementia regarding moments of dementia - will be used to designed into supergraphic
- 500 words explaining the process, creation, etc to establish the quotations
- (optional) 2-3 high quality photos of the artefact and/or imagery related to the context/space/situation/daily life moment etc. related to the quotes supplied.
- (optional) in relation to the artefact or imagery related to the quotation submitted.
