Convergences International Seminar 2019
Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil
October 09th - 11th
The organizational committee of the second edition of Convergences International Seminar invites artists and researchers submit works related to the general theme of the event: Post-digital: political perspectives in relations between art and technology.
Nowadays the post-digital term is associated, on one hand with the naturalization of digital technologies in our daily lives, and on the other hand with a moment of reflection on how they are affecting us today - individuals and society. We live in a time when these technologies dominate communications, including in the personal sphere, but also in everyday objects that are invested with intelligent and connected systems, which collect data and can make decisions to automate and optimize features. We start, therefore, from a critical approach of the post-digital term to discuss the contemporary artistic production, specifically in the ambit of media art. We associate the term with a disenchantment with digital information systems and gadgets, in a period in which the fascination with such systems and devices lost meaning. At the same time as the term points to a dilution of digital technologies, which are permeating experience in different spheres of human life. We see in art, a resistance to vigilance and control, to the domains of the great corporations of technology and collecting and analyzing the big data, and moving towards a multiple art, permeated by political, social, cultural and environmental issues.
We are interested in looking to the field of media art from aesthetic and poetic experiences that head for a multiplicity of modes of appropriation of the various issues arising from digital: explorations of the different materialities and critical appropriation of technological mediums, data usage from physical world phenomena, appropriation and remixing of data (sound, visual and numerical) from different spheres of the Internet, problematizations about the human cost and consumption of natural resources for technological development, colonial and decolonial approaches to technology, among others.
