BICA*AI 2023 is the Annual International Conference on Brain-Inspired Cognitive Architectures for Artificial Intelligence, also known as the 14th Annual Meeting of BICA Society, jointly organized by BICA Society and the College of Science and Technology, Ningbo University, Ningbo, China. This conference has been held every year since 2010 (Washington DC, USA, Palermo, Italy, Kyiv, Ukraine, Boston, MA, USA, Lyon, France, New York, NY, USA, Moscow, Russia, Prague, Czech Republic, Seattle, WA, USA, Natal, Brazil, Fukuchiyama, Japan, Vienna, Austria, Guadalajara, Mexico, and now Ningbo, China). BICA*AI 2023 welcomes original papers and talks on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures and on Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on the BICA Challenge (explained below). The conference BICA*AI is famous for its friendly, informal atmosphere and for its spirit of excitement and opportunity, that creates the fruitful grounds for the emergence of new key initiatives and collaborations.
Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures (BICA) are computational frameworks for building intelligent agents that are inspired from biological intelligence. Biological intelligent systems, notably animals such as humans, have many qualities that are often lacking in artificially designed systems including robustness, flexibility and adaptability to environments. At a point in time where visibility into naturally intelligent systems is exploding thanks to modern brain imaging and recording techniques, our ability to learn from nature and to build biologically inspired intelligent systems has never been greater. At the same time, the growth in computer science and technology has unleashed enough computational power, that an explosion of intelligent applications from augmented reality to intelligent virtual agents is now certain. The growth in these fields challenges the computational replication of all essential aspects of the human mind (the BICA Challenge), an endeavor which is interdisciplinary in nature and promises to yield bi-directional flow of understanding between all involved disciplines. We believe that it primarily relates to AI, because the future of AI is in interacting fluidly with humans.
The scope of the conference, in addition to Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Modeling, Neuromorphic Computing, and Social Robotics, includes areas like Virtual Reality, Ethical Issues in Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Serious Games, and more.
The format of the conference is a 3-day hybrid event (offline and online). The meeting will include paper presentations, keynotes and plenary talks, panel discussions, and demonstration showcases. The working language is English. As always, we are including an optional memorable social-cultural program.
Submission Guidelines
In this year we use two publication venues: Springer's book series "Studies in Computational Intelligence" (SCI), 100% indexed in Scopus, and the first-quartile academic journal "Cognitive Systems Research" published by Elsevier, indexed in WoS (Q1), Scopus (Q1), and more. Multiple publications by one author are encouraged. Further details can be found at the conference web site https://bica2023.org/.
The following submission categories are welcome:
- Long SCI papers: 9-20+ pages;
- Regular SCI papers — 6-8 pages, ~400 words each page;
- Talk abstracts — plain text, up to 1000 characters, no formatting, single paragraph. Standalone abstracts may be published in the front matter of the SCI book - or not published, depending on the Author's choice.
- Long papers intended for Cognitive Systems Research (no restriction on length);
- Poster abstracts for local distribution to participants (not publications);
- Personal bio statements for guest registrations, submitted as abstracts (no file uploads).
