What the Conference is about?
In the scope of the current human rights challenges our world is facing, arts are striving to find a fundamental place as a space for debate, critical thinking and empathy raiser. From climate change, refugee crisis or discrimination, to affirmation of authoritarian regimes, several events are prompting individual artists and collectives to rethink the role of art as an element for social change. In the last decade, several projects have been created in countries as Syria, Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia, among others, which may defy our current knowledge on artistic practices and ways of working around freedom of expression. In general, these practices are defined as “socially engaged art”, “participatory art”, “community art”, “relational art”, “political art” or “artistic activism”, but, as common definer, they rely on the idea of human rights and, more widely, on human dignity. Taking this subject as a lead, this conference is an open invitation to gather thinkers, academics, artists, activists, audiences, from civil society to governments, that are thinking or acting on the crossings of art and human rights around the globe, contribution to discuss how these initiatives enable social change – both on awareness and legislative levels.
