The first edition of the Winter Online Doctoral Workshop on New Directions for Complex Systems Research will be held on January 29-31, 2018. The workshop will bring together doctoral students from all fields related with complex systems research for engaging and friendly exchange of ideas. Doctoral students who are conducting interdisciplinary research in the field of complex systems are very welcome to submit literature reviews or early research abstracts. By doing so doctoral candidates will not only have the possibility to have a first evaluation on their research from two blind reviews but can also be a part of a process of intense exchange with other doctoral candidates who are researching on similar fields, creating an enriching contact network and facilitating future interaction.

The workshop aims at nurturing new insights on domains of complex systems research such as:
- Foundations of Complex Systems
- Information and Communication Technologies
- Cognition and Linguistics
- Economics and Finance
- Infrastructure, Planning and Environment
- Biological an (Bio)Medical Complexity
- Socio-Ecological Systems
- Complexity in Physics and Chemistry
Submission Guidelines
Types of submissions
The workshop welcomes original submissions in the form of literature reviews or abstracts such as:
- Literature reviews in any of the workshop domains.
- Abstracts of completed research in any of the workshop domains.
- Abstracts describing case studies in any of the workshop domains.
- Abstracts presenting doctoral work-in-progress, related to incomplete and ongoing research, or ideas for future research, in order to generate discussion and feedback in any of the workshop domains.
- Abstracts should include research objectives, proposed methodology, and discussion of the outcomes.
Statement of interest
Submissions should include a brief statement of interest containing the name, affiliation, name(s) of advisor(s), project title, project description, and an indication of where you currently are in the process of completing your doctorate.
Format
Submissions should respect Springer Word Template or the Springer Latex Template and the following number of pages:
- Literature reviews: 10-12 pages + statement of interest.
- Abstracts of completed research: 4-5 pages + statement of interest.
- Abstracts describing case studies: 4-5 pages + statement of interest.
- Abstracts presenting doctoral work-in-progress, related to incomplete and ongoing research, or ideas for future research: 2 pages + statement of interest.
Submission platform
Dates
- Literature reviews and abstracts should be submitted by January 5, 2018 at latest.
- All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 2 blind reviews.
- Notification of acceptance will be sent before January 12, 2018.
Oral presentation
Talks will be presented through the Internet Zoom videoconference platform and will take 15m + 5m discussion each.
Fee
There is no fee for the participation in the workshop.
Award
The 3 best submissions will be granted a free registration at the Summer Onsite Doctoral Workshop that will be held in Lisbon during June 2018.
