The Advances and Opportunities in Team Tutoring Workshop has been accepted as a half-day VIRTUAL workshop during the Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) 2022 conference. The workshop will take place VIRTUALLY on Sunday, July 31st, 2022. 

This workshop is seeking paper submissions for presentation and discussion during the half-day virtual workshop session.

The workshop covers the topic areas of approaches and challenges during team tutoring and collaborative learning in intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). The development of team ITSs is a time-intensive and difficult task that includes technological, instructional, and design based challenges.

Topics of Interest Include but are not limited to the following as they apply to ITSs for Teams:

• Natural Language Processing
• Distinguishing Taskwork vs. Teamwork
• Scaffolding and Pedagogical Modeling
• Team Tutoring in Distributed Environments
• Data Strategies
• Assessment Approaches and Ontologies ( e.g., automated scoring individuals to teams)
• Modeling Team Affect
• Modeling Team Behaviors and Group Problem Solving
• Data Visualization
• Working with Virtual Teammates

Researchers who are accepted for presentation during the workshop will have an opportunity to give a brief demonstration of their team tutoring systems if applicable. Presentations are encouraged to highlight approaches that were successful and approaches that were less successful when addressing the topics.

The goals of this workshop include providing a forum for researchers to discuss the progress that they have made in team or collaborative tutoring, discuss the approaches that they have taken, the challenges that they have encountered, and/or present theoretical models on innovative methodologies to address future work on team or collaborative tutoring. 

To begin the discussion, the workshop will include an introduction and description of the approaches to team tutoring that the co-chairs and colleagues have used in the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT). 

There will then be the presentation of accepted work in three topic areas:

1. ITSs for Teams in Distributed Environments
2. Technological Advancements in ITSs for Teams
3. ITS Based Collaborative Problem Solving and Learning

The presentations will be followed by an open discussion to identify commonalities in the previously executed approaches, and critique future theoretical work. Through the open discussion, the current challenges of team tutoring and gaps in the team tutoring research will be identified, and next steps/approaches that AIED researchers can use for their own team tutor development will be discussed.

Submission Guidelines

All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper category is welcome:

• Full papers (between 5 to 12 pages in CEUR-ART format) on topics in the following theme areas, or related areas:
  • • ITSs for Teams in Distributed Environments
    • Technological Advancements in ITSs for Teams
    • ITS Based Collaborative Problem Solving and Learning
• Accepted full papers will be presented during the workshop, and if applicable can include a demonstration of the team tutoring system (Please indicate it in your abstract if you would like to include a demonstration).
• Both empirical and theoretical papers with topics related to team tutoring and computer-based collaborative learning are welcome.
• Extended Abstracts (at least 800 words) should be submitted by May 11th, 2022.
• Notifications of Acceptance will be sent out by May 31st, 2022.
• Full camera-ready papers are due by June 30th, 2022.
• The workshop will be held on July 31st, 2022 virtually.
