The diversity across tumors from different patients and even across cancer cells from the same patient makes the picture very complex. The idea of ‘personalized’ or ‘precision’ medicine has been suggested, aiming to find tailored treatment regimen for each patient according to the individual genetic background and tumor molecular profile. This attempt is achievable thanks to sufficient molecular characterization of cancers accumulated using high-throughput technologies and advanced imaging technologies. However, despite availability of cancer multi-scale data, they are not fully exploited to provide the clue on deregulated mechanisms that would guide better patients stratification and to specific treatment in cancer.
Main topics:
Cancer, Clinical research, Prior knowledge, Omics, Spatial transcriptomics, Imaging data, Radiomics, Clinical data, Text mining, Integration,Interpretation, Mathematical modelling, Predictive models for various multi-omics data types,Treatment response prediction and prognosis, Multi-modal data integration.
This course is a FEBS-supported event.
Application deadline: 30th of July, 2022
Selection result announcement day: 5th of August, 2022
There is no registration fee for this course.
Location
Institut Curie - Bâtiment de Biologie du Développement - Amphithéâtre
Objectives
The objective of the course is to promote better use of computational approaches into biological labs and to clinics. We aim to help participants to improve interpretation of various types of data accumulated in the labs using multi-modal data integration approaches.
This course is supported by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). One of FEBS’ core objectives is the publication of high-quality journals by scientists for scientists. Check HERE for more information about FEBS Journals.
Personal work
In addition to attendance of the lectures, the participants are expected to take part in the following events:
- Post-docs: Presentation of their own scientific project with a 10 minutes flash presentation and a poster (Size A0, portrait)
- PhD students: Presentation of their own scientific project with a 3 minutes flash presentation and a poster (Size A0, portrait)
- Master students: Presentation during the Journal Club.
The students will be assigned with seminal articles in the field and will be asked to prepare and present the assigned articles during journal club sessions.
-All participants: Participation in the Career development session
Exam & evaluation
The course will be validated by 4 ECTS for Master and PhD students. The course certificates will be issues and sent to the participants in the end of the course.
Evaluation of students (by the scientific committee):
-Master students will be evaluated according to their presentation in a Journal club
-PhD students will be evaluated according to their flash presentations + posters
-Post-doc applicants are requested to present a flash presentation and a poster on their scientific research. Most significant abstracts will be chosen for more prolonged 15-minutes talks.
Practical information
The registration for students and post-doc is free-of-charge. Registration is mandatory for all categories of attendees.
Upon the registration and following the selection procedure, the course participants will be provided with access to:
- Lectures, slides, posters, course booklet
- Career development workshop session
- Journal club presentations
- Social events
The course can accommodate up to 100 participants (Master 2 students, PhD students and post-docs).
In addition, we expect attendees among researchers, physicians and pharma companies representatives interested to learn about systems biology impact into cancer research and treatment.
Selection criteria
No previous experience in programming and modelling methods or deep knowledge in systems biology is required. The talks will be constructed in a didactic manner, introducing the audience to the basics on systems biology approaches and applications for cancer research.
Selections for participation in the course are based on applications.
Application for the course
- CV (max. 1 page)
- Description of scientific topic in a form of abstract (max. 1 page)
- Motivation letter explaining objectives to attend the course (max. 1 page)
- Recommendation letter from at least 1 reference contact
Note: if your reference(s) wishes to communicate directly with the scientific committee of the course, the recommendation letter(s) can be sent to BEFORE the registration deadline.
