Southwestern Philosophical Society 2021 Annual Meeting Call For Papers
An association of scholars and philosophers founded in 1936, Southwestern Philosophical Society provides a forum for philosophical and scholarly research. While SWPS originally served philosophers in the American Southwest, it has been for many years a national and international society. While SWPS does follow trends and methods that prevail in the world of Anglo-American philosophy, the Society is proud of its pluralism and its tradition of openness where scholars from diverse backgrounds and of all major traditions find their views and philosophical styles taken seriously.
The 2021 meeting of the Southwestern Philosophical Society will be held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN from Oct. 15-16. All papers accepted and presented at the conference will be published in volume 38, issue 1 of the Southwest Philosophy Review.
Papers on any philosophical topic are welcome. There are multiple benefits to submitting to the Southwestern Philosophical Society:
1. All papers undergo blind peer review from two scholars;
2. Presented papers will receive a written commentary, published in Volume 38, issue 2;
3. While the journal owns the copyrights to the journal-formatted article, the author retains copyright over the words. Thus, the author can potentially expand the conference-length article and publish it in another venue.
Submission Guidelines
Electronic submissions are required and should be submitted to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=swps2021. Papers must be in PDF format (if accepted for publication, the author must provide a MS Word [.doc/docx] or Rich Text Format [.rtf]). Papers submitted in any other format cannot be processed. Papers may not exceed 3000 words in length (not including notes and references). Submissions should include a word count and 150 word abstract (not counted in total word count) on the title page. Papers exceeding this length will not be considered. Papers should be prepared for blind review. The deadline for submissions is extended to August 9th, 2021.
Travel Grants: The Society is aware of the hardship that many young and early career philosophers face. In that spirit, this year we are offering a limited number of $150 travel grants to help defray travel costs. The grants are available to early career philosophers (defined as graduate students or scholars who completed their PhD no more than three years ago) and philosophers from underrepresented groups. Authors who are eligible for these grants should indicate this on the cover page of their submission.
Membership: You must be a member of the society to publish in volume one of the journal. Dues must be paid by October 1st, 2021. To join, send inquiries to Deb Heikes, University of Alabama – Huntsville, heikesd@uah.edu.
