Conference Topics
The Conference will feature sessions on all the research areas in neuroethics. As neuroethics has always been an interdisciplinary field, the conference aims at promoting a debate among different scholars and different research areas.
Contributions can be experimental, theoretical, analytical, or critical works.
Submission Guidelines and Attendance
Participants can only send one contribution as first authors, but they can appear as second authors of other contributions.
Abstracts must be submitted through EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sine-2023).
Any request for information should be sent to convegno@societadineuroetica.it.
Abstracts must be ready for double blind review and should not exceed 300 words, plus 10 reference records (that will not be considered in the word count). Authors should indicate in their submission whether their contribution is intended as a paper or poster. Papers will be presented only in person, whereas posters can be either presented in person or online. Based on reviewers’ reports, a paper could be accepted as a poster rather than for oral presentation.
For papers, abstracts can be either in English or in Italian, according to the language chosen for the presentation. However, since the audience is international, we warmly encourage submissions in English.
Best Paper Prize
As in previous years, SINe will grant two prizes: one for the best paper in philosophy and one for the best paper in neuroscience. The authors willing to participate in the competition for best paper should select “SINe Best Paper Prize – Philosophy” or “SINe Best Paper Prize – Neuroscience”. They will also have to upload a longer version of the abstract (up to 1000 words, references excluded) in the “paper” section. The lack of either the selection of the category or of the long abstract will constitute an excluding condition. The Prizes will consist in 500 euros each. The selection will be made based on the quality of the long abstract. The winners will be announced at the beginning of the conference.
Best Poster Prize
This year, SINe will also grant a prize for the best poster. The authors willing to participate in the competition should select “SINe Best Poster Prize”. The lack of the selection will constitute an excluding condition. The Prize will consist in 500 euros for the first prize and 300 euros for the second one. The winner will be announced at the beginning of the conference.
Deadlines and Reviewing Process
The deadline for abstract submission is January 31st, 2023.
Notification of acceptance will be given by March 15th, 2023.
Abstracts will be subject to blind review. Reviewers will be selected from members of the Italian Society for Neuroethics and from experts in the field.
Accepted papers will have 20 minutes for presentation, plus 10 minutes for discussion. Accepted posters will have a dedicated space online and during the conference.
All authors of selected papers and posters will have to subscribe to the Conference.
Conference Program
The Conference Program will be available on the SINe website (https://societadineuroetica.wordpress.com).
A hybrid side event on Minding rights: Ethical and Legal Foundations of Neurotechnology and Human Rights will be held on May 12, 2023, after the main conference.
Abstract: Recently, the academic discussion around the ethical and legal protection of the human mind and brain - often framed around the term "neurorights" - has also entered the international human rights and policymaking arena. Many organizations, such as OECD, UNESCO, and others as well as legislating bodies at the national level (e.g. in Chile) are now working on legal frameworks. However, for many of the key concepts in this area - especially 'mental privacy', 'mental integrity', and 'cognitive liberty - no clear consensus on their conceptual and ethical foundation as well as legal interpretation is available. In this podium discussion, leading scholars in this area will address conceptual and ethical foundations and ways forward for the legal interpretation of "neurorights".
More info on it will be available soon on the SINe website.
