Symposium on Motivated Irrationality
Invited Speaker: Alfred Mele (Florida State University)
Organisers: Elisabetta Galeotti (University of Eastern Piedmont), Patrizia Pedrini (University of Florence)
Scientific Committee: Elisabetta Galeotti (University of Eastern Piedmont), Patrizia Pedrini (University of Florence), Anne Meylan Massin (University of Basilea)
Description: Motivated Irrationality is the label given to a large family of phenomena of irrationality which is imputable to the biasing effect of motivation over cognition — and not to limits that are intrinsic to human cognitive finitude, “cold” biases, involuntary negligence, inculpable ignorance, and so on. Scholars believe that several psychological phenomena belongs to this family: self-deception, wishful thinking, precipitate beliefs motivationally driven, “hot” biases themselves, independently of any further irrational developments. It is also under scrutiny what kinds of self-delusion belong to this family, and how. The symposium aims at gathering scholars working in this area, and invites submissions of paper about issues which include (and are not limited to): the distinction between different phenomena of motivated irrationality, their descriptive dimension, their causation and explanation.
Up to 3 contributed talks will be selected through blind procedure.
Length of submitted abstracts: 1000 words max, including references.

Symposium on Constitutivism in Action Theory
Invited Speakers: Adrian Haddock (Stirling University); Matthias Haase (University of Chicago); Luca Ferrero (University of California-Riverside)
Organiser: Carla Bagnoli (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia/Oslo)
Scientific Committee: Carla Bagnoli (University of Modena/Oslo), Adrian Haddock (Stirling University), Matthias Haase (University of Chicago), Luca Ferrero (University of California-Riverside)
Description: Constitutivism in action theory is the view that some basic norms can be grounded on features of rational agency. What we have reason to do is grounded in facts about our nature as acting and reasoning beings. To this extent, constitutivism claims that facts about our nature as rational agents have explanatory priority over facts about reasons for action. Critics object that constitutivist explanations are circular or uninformative. The symposium aims to assess the promise and prospects of constitutivism as an explanation of rational action.
Up to 3 contributed talks will be selected through blind procedure.
Length of submitted abstracts: 1000 words max, including references.

FilMat Symposium on Abstractionism in the Philosophy of Mathematics
Invited Speaker: Øystein Linnebo (University of Oslo)
Organisers: Francesca Boccuni (University San Raffaele, Milan), Andrea Sereni (IUSS, Pavia)
Scientific Committee: Francesca Boccuni, Øystein Linnebo, Marco Panza, Mario Piazza, Matteo Plebani, Luca San Mauro, Andrea Sereni, Giorgio Venturi
Description: Abstractionism in the philosophy of mathematics is the endeavour of recovering as much mathematics as possible from higher-order logic and Fregean abstraction principles, which provide a priori knowledge of the mathematical notions so defined and access to the intrinsic nature of the abstracta so introduced. In the past few decades, we have witnessed a renewal of the interest in this particular strain of foundational research, thanks to the works of Michael Dummett, Crispin Wright, George Boolos, Bob Hale, John Burgess, Kit Fine, Øystein Linnebo, to mention just a few.
The symposium aims at investigating topics connected with current abstractionist programmes, including the mathematics, ontology, epistemology, metaphysics of abstraction; grounded abstraction; reference by abstraction.
Up to 3 contributed talks will be selected through blind procedure.
Length of submitted abstracts: 1000 words max, including references.

IUSS Symposium on Mind and Subjectivity
Invited Speaker: Marie Guillot (University of Essex)
Organisers: Michele Di Francesco (IUSS, Pavia), Giulia Piredda (IUSS, Pavia), Alfredo Tomasetta (IUSS, Pavia)
Scientific Committee: Michele Di Francesco, Marie Guillot, Giulia Piredda, Alfredo Tomasetta
Description: In recent work on consciousness, a distinction has been drawn between two aspects of phenomenal consciousness. These are the qualitative character of experiences, the specific way they feel to the subject, and the fact that there is something it is like for the subject to undergo them. The second aspect is discussed under different names – e.g.: “for-me-ness”, “mineness”, “subjective character”, “awareness of awareness”, “sense of ownership” – by many contemporary authors, including Billon, Gallagher, Guillot, Kriegel, Levine, Metzinger, Montague, Nida-Rümelin, Strawson and Zahavi, and was also central to earlier work by James, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Sartre.
The symposium aims at investigating topics connected with current research on for-me-ness. In particular, possible topics include, but are not limited to: For-me-ness and (phenomenal) consciousness; Metaphysical and phenomenological for-me-ness; For-me-ness and the self; Different notions of for-me-ness; For-me-ness and mental disorders; Indexicality and for-me-ness; For-me-ness and the phenomenological tradition; For-me-ness in classical Indian thought; Scepticism about for-me-ness
Up to 3 contributed talks will be selected through blind procedure.
Length of submitted abstracts: 1000 words max, including references.
