In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, managers are constantly asked to make choices about where to focus their time, resources, and attention. New technologies, changing workforce expectations, economic uncertainty, global competition, and evolving customer needs create opportunities while also placing new demands on organizations and their leaders. Amid these competing priorities, effective management requires more than simply doing more. It requires understanding what truly matters and having the discipline, knowledge, and leadership to act on it.
The theme of the 82nd Annual Business Conference of the Society for Advancement of Management, “Advancing Management: Managing What Matters,” challenges academicians, practitioners, and students to examine the priorities, decisions, systems, and people that shape organizational success. It asks a fundamental management question: What matters most, and how should organizations manage it?
Frederick Winslow Taylor and the pioneers of scientific management sought to improve organizations by carefully examining how work was performed and identifying better ways to accomplish it. While organizations and workplaces have changed dramatically since Taylor’s time, the underlying challenge remains relevant. Managers must determine which activities create value, which processes require improvement, how resources should be allocated, and how individual efforts can contribute to broader organizational goals.
Advancing management requires applying these principles to the realities of modern organizations.
Managing what matters begins with establishing clear priorities. Organizations have access to more information, technology, and performance data than ever before, yet having more information does not necessarily lead to better decisions. Leaders must distinguish meaningful information from noise and translate data into action. Financial performance, customer satisfaction, employee engagement, productivity, quality, innovation, and organizational growth can all be important, but their significance depends on the organization, its mission, and the challenges it faces. Effective managers understand that not everything can be a priority at the same time.
People also remain at the center of what matters. Organizations depend on individuals and teams to turn strategies into results. Recruiting and retaining talent, developing future leaders, building effective teams, managing performance, and creating opportunities for professional growth are essential management responsibilities. As expectations surrounding work continue to evolve, managers must consider how leadership practices, organizational culture, communication, and employee development influence both individual and organizational performance. Managing people effectively is not separate from achieving results; it is fundamental to achieving them.
Technology presents another important challenge. Artificial intelligence, automation, analytics, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies are changing how organizations operate and how decisions are made. The management challenge is no longer simply whether organizations should adopt new technologies, but how they can use them effectively and responsibly. Managers must determine which technologies create meaningful value, how they should be integrated into existing operations, and how organizations can prepare employees for changing roles and expectations. Managing what matters means recognizing technology as a tool for advancing organizational objectives rather than an objective in itself.
Organizations must also manage through uncertainty. Economic changes, supply chain disruptions, workforce shortages, competitive pressures, regulatory developments, and unexpected crises can quickly alter organizational priorities. Resilient organizations are able to respond without losing sight of their fundamental purpose. This requires thoughtful planning, sound financial management, operational flexibility, ethical decision-making, and leaders who can make difficult choices when information is incomplete.
Managing what matters also requires looking beyond immediate results. Decisions made today influence an organization’s long-term financial health, workforce, reputation, customers, communities, and ability to compete in the future. Managers must balance short-term performance with long-term sustainability while considering the broader consequences of organizational decisions. Ethical leadership, responsible use of resources, stakeholder relationships, and organizational accountability are therefore not peripheral concerns; they are central management issues.
Education has an equally important role in advancing management. Colleges and universities must prepare students to enter workplaces that are changing rapidly, while organizations must continually develop the knowledge and capabilities of their existing workforce. Experiential learning, assessment, career development, professional education, mentoring, and partnerships between education and industry can help ensure that individuals have the skills necessary to manage and lead effectively. Research that examines how management is taught, learned, measured, and applied contributes directly to the advancement of the profession.
Evidence must ultimately guide these efforts. Effective management requires organizations to ask difficult questions, evaluate results, learn from both successes and failures, and continuously improve. Research and practice should help managers understand not only what works, but why it works, under what circumstances, and how those lessons can be applied to new challenges. Advancing management depends on connecting rigorous scholarship with practical problems and meaningful organizational outcomes.
The Society for Advancement of Management invites academicians, practitioners, and students to submit research, case studies, applied projects, and innovative ideas that explore what matters in today’s organizations and how it can be managed more effectively. Contributions may examine leadership, strategy, operations, technology, human resources, organizational behavior, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, project management, ethics, sustainability, education, career development, analytics, or other areas that contribute to stronger organizations and better management.
“Advancing Management: Managing What Matters” is ultimately a call to focus management scholarship and practice on the decisions, people, systems, and ideas that make a meaningful difference. By identifying what matters, measuring what matters, and managing what matters, we can strengthen organizations, develop more capable leaders, and continue advancing the theory and practice of management.
