URBAN MOBILITY INDIA (UMI) YOUNG RESEARCHERS' SYMPOSIUM
The annual Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Expo is a flagship event under the aegis of Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India. The event is inaugurated by Union Minister for Urban Development. The genesis of UMI is from the National Urban Transport Policy of the Government of India, 2006 (NUTP), which lays a very strong emphasis on building capabilities at the state and city level to address the problems associated with urban transport and undertakes the task of developing sustainable urban transport systems. The event essentially has three components, as described below.
Conference
The primary objective of the conference is to disseminate information to the cities, whose officials attend the conference, and to help them keep up-to-date with best urban transport practices. The conference provides an opportunity for key decision makers and delegates to interact with other professionals, experts, academia, industry, civil society, technology, services providers and other stakeholders in Urban Transport both domestic and international so that the delegates can carry home ideas to develop their urban transport along a sustainable path. It is also a forum to discuss key issues relevant to the sector and suggest measures to address them.
Young Researchers' Symposium
The symposium provides a platform to highlight the current research carried out by academia and research institutes in urban transport, especially by young researchers pursuing post graduate or Ph.D. programs.
Exhibition
The expo is a special feature of UMI to disseminate and showcase the latest development in urban transport technology and systems, implementation of best transport projects, propagation of innovative ideas, presentation of research in the topical areas of interest in urban transport and exchange of good urban transport initiatives and practices in the field.
This year 10th UMI Conference is jointly being organized with CODATU XVII Conference and Govt. of Telangana. CODATU is a French organization which promotes sustainable urban mobility in the developing world. Since 1980, every 2-3 years, CODATU is organizing International Conference on urban transport with the aim of promoting sustainable urban mobility policies in emerging cities. Each time, this even takes place alternatively in a city of Africa, Asia, Europe or Latin America. By organizing this Conference in cooperation with local and international partners, CODATU aims at bringing together academics, researchers, practitioners, local authorities, private sector and civil society to discuss persisting challenges and future opportunities, and to share experiences to boost international cooperation. For each conference, CODATU establishes a dedicated International Scientific Committee which supervises the Call for Abstracts and the selection of papers. This year, 160 abstracts have been received and around 50 papers will be presented during the Conference on the topic "Transport for Inclusive Urban Societies".
Till date nine editions of the event have been held successfully. The tenth edition of the Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference will be held from 4th to 6th November, 2017 at Hyderabad. The theme of this year's conference is "Intelligent, Inclusive and Sustainable Mobility". The event will be organized by the Institute of Urban Transport (India). A Research Symposium will also be held as part of this conference on 5th – 6th November 2017. The symposium is proposed as platform to highlight the current research undertaken by young researchers belonging to various academic/research institutions.
The purpose of the Research Symposium is to:
- Encourage young researchers working in various facets of urban transport to present their research work and provide them an opportunity for networking with fellow researchers and professionals,
- Enhance capacity building of young researchers in the field of urban transport, and
- Contribute towards building up of research database, its dissemination and identification of research thrust areas in the country.
Six research sub-themes in concurrence with the theme of the Conference have been identified for the Research Symposium. Papers pertaining to these sub-themes are being invited from young researchers and select papers for presentation at the Research Symposium would be shortlisted through a peer review process.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi will be coordinating the Research Symposium this year.

Criteria for Paper Selection
Paper Selection for Presentation:
Papers will be selected based on the grades awarded by reviewers. Papers will be rank-ordered based on review grades and the top thirty in the ranked list will be recommended for presentation.
Criteria for Award:
Nine papers from the pool of thirty recommended for presentation will be included in the initial list for award. These papers will be evaluated by the jury during the presentation and a weighted score, based on review grades and jury’s marks, will be calculated. The papers will then be rank ordered based on the new scores and the top 3 will be considered for award.
