About the Conference

Quantum Science and Engineering Education Conference (QSEEC) is an annual conference where education researchers and practitioners come together to discuss methodologies for curriculum and tool development for instruction and teaching. The emphasis is on addressing the need for quantum information science education, translating from teachable skills to real world applications, and sharing perspectives from educators and professionals in QSE alike. QSEEC is collocated with the IEEE International Conference on Quantum Computing & Engineering (QCE23, under a broader umbrella of IEEE Quantum Week), and is under the same registration and submission system.  For paper submissions to QCE23 not for quantum education, see the QCE23 EasyChair Call for Papers.

We welcome contributions on all approaches and learners of QSE.  Learners may be from any background, stage of learning, and geographical location.  Sessions are organized into four tracks: K-12, university, industry, and community-based education.

This is the second edition of this conference. For its predecessors, refer to the webpage of the 1st QSEEC at QCE22, and the Teaching Quantum Information Science workshop at QCE21.

 

Call for Papers, Talks, and Posters

QSEEC 2023 seeks talks and discussion on teaching and developing materials for learning quantum information science, quantum engineering, quantum technologies, and quantum computing. Submissions are welcome from any geographical region, for any age and type of learner, on any subject within the field of quantum information science and engineering.

  • Paper submission deadline: April 17, 2023, Anytime on Earth
  • Talk abstract submission deadline: May 15, 2023, Anytime on Earth
  • Paper and talk acceptance notification date: TBD, 2023
  • Poster abstract submission deadline: June 1, 2023, Anytime on Earth
  • Conference dates: Sunday, September 17 and Monday, September 18, 2023

Examples of welcome topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Best practices for teaching QSE concepts
  • Hands-on lab design for in the classroom or virtual instruction
  • Effectiveness of quantum software tools with a curricular component or of games with quantum phenomena in their game mechanics
  • Findings from organizing courses, bootcamps, workshops, teacher trainings, or hackathons
  • Methodologies for quantum education to better reach larger or underrepresented audiences, and improve their participation and retention
  • Work on code tutorials, comics, videos, lectures, and all other media formats such as detailed description on the development as a resource for others, usability to grasp concepts, or appeal to different audiences
  • Review of the landscape of a topical area, geographical region, demographic, or other aspect of quantum education and/or outreach
  • Description of a proposed course, curriculum, or standards framework supported by the rationale for its structure

 

Submission Types & Submission Guidelines

The allowed submission formats for QSEEC23 are more flexible to accommodate for and encourage the diversity of disciplines and approaches integral to quantum education.

Papers

Each technical paper contribution must conform at the time of submission to the IEEE Formatting Instructions (i.e., title in 24pt font and full text in 10pt type, LaTEX users must use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran} without including the compsoc or compsocconf option). The submission must also comply with the IEEE Policy on Authorship.

In addition to the formats allowed by the QCE23 Call for Papers, any submitted papers 2 to 10 pages in length are eligible for IEEE Quantum Week proceedings. 

Talks and Posters

For talk and poster abstracts, the submission format is a one or more paragraph abstract (description of the talk or poster).  There is also the option to upload any supporting documents or link to relevant materials, for instance papers not intended for proceedings or already published.  Talk and poster abstracts are not published in the proceedings, but will be available online in the conference program booklet.

Important Technical Paper Submission Requirements

  • By submitting a technical paper to IEEE QSEEC 2023, you are making a commitment for at least one author to register and attend the conference upon acceptance of your paper.  Note: This can be through any registration option, whether that be Sunday or Monday one-day in-person, Sunday and Monday two-day in-person, virtual weeklong, or in-person weeklong, as long as the author registering qualifies for the type of registration (for instance, only students may register for student reduced registration).
  • All conference speakers and participants must be registered to attend, either in-person or virtually, the conference on Sunday, September 17 and/or Monday, September 18.  Limited funding is available covering the cost of conference registration for accepted speakers for whom registration is a financial barrier, on a case-by-case basis.
