Hellenic Federation of Chanters’ Associations (HEFECA) and Trikala Chanters Association are kindly announcing the holding of the 1st International Scientific Conference of the Greek-Orthodox Chanting Community (GOCC) entitled "Psaltiki 2.0", which will be performed at the Municipality of Trikala, during Wednesday 3rd to Saturday 6th November 2021. The Conference is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Prefecture of Thessaly. It is co-organized with the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage, the Region of Thessaly, the Municipality of Meteora and the Holy Monasteries. |
The organization of Conferences in the GOCC was an old, statutory pursuit of HEFECA, which became a necessity, dictated by the obligation to monitor and manage the Byzantine Chant as an element of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), registered in the National Indexes of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece (registration 2014) and Cyprus (registration 2018) as well as in the International Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - UNESCO (2020 registration). The Conference has been evaluated and partly-financed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports with the aim to meet the requirements of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention (2003). |
The GOCC is one of the oldest guilds of the Hellenic Nation and the entire Homeland (Romiosini), counting more than 10,000 Chanters (or Hieropsaltes or Psaltes) and offers its services to Greek Othodox Hellenism, “dressing” and covering musically the sacred services of the church and preserving - over time - the enormous wealth of Greek music tradition. For more than a millennium - and more - before the establishment of the Greek State and until today, in the temples of cities and villages of the Church of Greece, the Provincial Synod of the Church of Crete, the Dioceses of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Holy Monasteries and Cemeteries, psaltes cover exclusively "fixed and permanent" needs, as they are by the Holy Canons, the Statutory Charter of the Church of Greece (articles 4, case e, and 36 paragraph 6 of law 590/1977) and the Church Regulations of Greece 176/2006 “On the Hieropsalts and their Situation (Government Gazette A' 268 / 19.12.2006). The Hieropsalt, throughout time, is considered a public servant and a lower clergyman of the Church. He performs, according to the ancient canons of the Church a Sacred work, as the main and direct associate of the Priest, as well as a representative of the Church crew, in every aspect during the service. Simultaneously, he is an artist, with studies of various levels, a teacher, a researcher, a cultural manager and, therefore, the only bearer of the Psaltic art. He occupies, after a public announcement, a position in each Church and is compensated according to the Greek labour legislation. (specifically Articles 3 and 5 Reg. 176/2006). |
TOPICS The 1st International Conference of the Psaltic Community, "PSALTIKI 2.0", aspires to function in an interdisciplinary level to become a starting point for the substantial promotion of the multifaceted and multi-layered nature of a modern Hieropsalt, of an important personality who can combine the role of ecclesiastic worker, that of cultural manager, the guardian of tradition, the music teacher and the "National Musician/ Ethnomusicologist", i.e a person who with the appropriate (institutional, pedagogical and social) conditions can play a central role in the social and economic life of the local community. |
At the same time, the purpose of the Conference is the unity of the Hieropsaltic Community and the substantial activation of its prominent Members, who have the privilege apart from being known as chanters, to be distinguished in an admirably diverse areas that cover almost every scientific field and profession, maintaining the unique privilege of "multifaceted" vision, which enables them to assess the developing perspective of the Chanting Art, in every expression of its ecclesiastical mission. |
The Conference serves a second, equally important role, along with its scientific character that to promote in the local community and worldwide the enormous cultural value of Psaltic Art, by presenting the distinguished choirs of the Psaltes Associations and to promote well-known Chanters -Artists, embellishing its works with Concerts and various kinds of parallel artistic events. |
In the context of the Conference, a special festive Session will be held, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the National Rebirth entitled "Byzantine Music: The Music of the Nation".
