Submission deadline | July 1, 2022 |
This event will be the first of three yearly summer workshops supported by the John Templeton Foundation through the grant “Directedness in the Physiology, Ecology, and Evolution of Holobiont Systems”. Talks that are related to topics of the grant (broadly construed) will receive priority, but all talks under the broader category of “life sciences” will be considered. Prioritized topics include: holobionts, host-microbiome interactions and modeling, symbiosis, biological individuality, holobiont and/or system-level health, and eco-evolutionary models.
The overall goal of this summer workshop will be to construct a “serendipity generator”, an event structured to provide ample opportunity and room for innovative ideas to naturally emerge. Successful and surprising cross-disciplinary collaborations are difficult to force; instead they are often borne out of chance conversations and interactions during conferences, research cruises, and workshops. This workshop is aimed at philosophers, scientists, and scholars working on or within the life sciences, with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary interaction and encouraging collaboration.
POBAMA will be organized as a 3.5 day retreat with participants staying at a common location and taking their meals together. Each working day will consist of 3-4 hours of talks given by participants, broken up by roundtable discussion events and breakout sessions held at a relaxed pace. Mornings and evenings will be left open in order to let the participants engage with each other in smaller groups during leisure activities such as hikes, games, or discussions over food.
Submit a ~500 word abstract for a 30min talk or a 100 word abstract for a flash talk by July 1st. Submissions will be blind reviewed. Works in progress not yet submitted for publication are especially encouraged. All full talks will also be considered for flash talks. Submit via Easychair (Link here)
POBAMA is the first POBAM satellite meeting. Like regular meetings, these will showcase innovative and new work, highlight areas of potential new research, provide the opportunity for constructive feedback and training with peers, and encourage work bridging philosophy and biology. POBAM satellite workshops are intended to be smaller gatherings that are more narrowly focused than general POBAM meetings.
The workshop will take place at Luna’s Trail Farm and Event Center in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Lodging is limited and accommodations may have to be shared depending on total attendance. On-site camping is also available.
Financial support will be available. Details forthcoming.
