The transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century has witnessed a paradigm shift from the industrial revolution to a predominantly knowledge-based society known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The 4IR is characterized by the disruptive digital transformation of the public sector, the commercial sector, and society at large. The large-scale digital transformation of society has partly been hinged on the changing nature of innovation: from Closed Innovation, anchored largely on internal ideas, paths, architectures, and systems; to Open Innovation, characterized by reliance on both internal and external ideas, paths, architectures, and systems. The open architecture of the Internet, characterized by nomadic, transparent, cloud and fog computing environments, is the basis of a collaborative, peer-to-peer, sharing economy, currently stirring and sustaining the development of Open Innovations in different regions of the globe. These Open Innovations are enabled by disruptive digital technologies and devices such as smartphones, Internet of Things (IoTs), collaborative and crowdsourcing applications, social media tools, product and service providers and traditional web browsers. The 2020 Open Innovations Conference recognizes that the 4IR is an imperative that underpins contemporary human progress, with societal changes exemplified by Schumpeter’s ‘creative disruption’ and Christensen’s ‘disruptive technologies’. The focus of the 2020 Open Innovations Conference on “Making Innovation Inclusive” seeks to provide a platform in which inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research and practice elevate the concept of “Open Innovations” as an enabler of human progress.
