Overview
The ICWSM-2021 Workshop MEDIATE aims to bring together media practitioners and technologists to discuss the new obstacles and opportunities that are established by the modern era of information diffusion. Particular emphasis will be given to interdisciplinary interactions that will enable participants to assess the current consensus and outline future challenges.
Topics
Misinformation is regarded as a problem that has reached new heights in the current information sphere, partly due to the ease, the diversity of mediums, the reach, and the consequences of information dissemination.
MEDIATE's topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Automated methods against misinformation. We welcome submissions proposing novel methodologies, describing their advantages and also challenges in creating accurate systems that would be adopted in practice by journalists and the public. In particular, we would like to discuss the state-of-the-art in automated and human-in-the-loop methods aiming to assist in the information verification process, such as
- Rumor detection
- Verification
- Fact-checking
- Stance classification.
- Uptake of automation. In the workshop, we would like to discuss
- Automated solutions that have been successfully adopted (e.g., identifying trending news/events, clustering relevant posts together)
- Challenges in the adoption of solutions addressing misinformation directly
- Partial solutions to said challenges (e.g., interpretable models).
- Ethics, regulation and governance: Interdisciplinary discussions around digital governance and democracy are of particular interest. In particular, we would like to discuss the following questions.
- What types of interventions are the most effective to prevent the spread of false claims?
- What are the ethical boundaries of automated content moderation?
- How can one implement public and private governance on automated content moderation?
- What are the limits of automated information regulation?
Venue
The conference will be held in Atlanta, USA.
