ISMS 2022
From, this year, October 10 to 13, the Military University Institute of Portugal organizes, in its facilities, the 14th Conference of the International Society of Military Sciences (ISMS), ISMS 2022.
ISMS is a free association of the highest level of military education institutions in small democratic countries. These are typically defence universities with a mandate for generating, curating, and disseminating knowledge of military sciences. The member organizations are the Austrian National Defence Academy, Baltic Defence College, Royal Military College of Canada, Royal Danish Defence College, Finnish National Defence University, Netherlands Defence Academy, Norwegian Defence University College, Swedish Defence University, War Studies University of Poland.
Portugal, more precisely the IUM, has been part of this organization since 2019, having assumed the annual presidency in October 2021. The President of the ISMS Council is Commodore João Marreiros and the Chair of the Conference is Captain João Gil, both from the IUM.
ISMS 2022 will feature, in addition to several lectures and plenary meetings, 10 working groups dealing with Military Sciences subjects, such as: War Studies, Military History, Military Technology, Law and Ethics, Leadership and Command, Security and Defence Policy, Armed Forces and Society, Defence Management and Economics, Military Education and Strategy.
Submission Guidelines
All submissions must be original and not submitted to another journal or conference.
The submissions are in the form of extended abstratcts (between 300 and 800 words).

Conference Proceedings
The Conference Proceedings, with all the abstracts (in the form of extended abstracts, 300 to 800 words, about 1 or 2 pages, see the submission guidelines) approved after review, will be published prior to the Conference.
After the conference, it is also planned the publication of full papers (about 10 to 20 pages) in a separate volume, a special issue of one of the journals of the ISMS members(TBD). This is not mandatory for participants, only for the ones that wish to do so, and may go through a more detailed peer review process.
Venue
The Conference ISMS 2022 will be organized for both on-site and online participation, at the Military University Institute of Portugal, Lisbon. The expected participation is 200 participants, representing the defense universities of the ISMS, as well as many other participants from other countries all over the world, mainly from military and academic community.
The Military University Institute of Portugal is a public higher education institution for military studies for the Armed Forces and the National Republican Guard, enabling officers for command and staff duties within their branches, combined joint forces and international organizations. The Military University Institute offers a variety of postgraduate courses to the academic community, including the PhD in Military Sciences and the Master of Science in Military Sciences, Defense and Security. It is also responsible for several military career education and training courses, such as the Flag Officers Course and the Staff Officers Course.
The Military University Institute of Portugal has a Research and Development Centre that promotes the realization of projects in Military Sciences and the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the areas of national security and defense, in collaboration with national and international institutions.
The Military University Institute of Portugal publishes the Portuguese Journal of Military Sciences since 2015, which is a double-blind peer reviewed international journal, published twice a year, in May and November, in open access and free of charge for authors. The aim of this Journal, within the scope of a reputable peer-reviewed journal, is the achievement of recognition as a forum of trustworthy reflexion, debate and dissemination of academic, scientific and research for the development of Military Sciences.
LODGING: The Military University Institute of Portugal is located in Lisbon, close to the Tagus River, in a very pleasant and touristic area.
