Title: Data Protection Vs Child Protection - The challenges facing those who work with children and young people.
Currently, 50,000 children in the UK are at risk from living in 'toxic' households1, exposed to drug/alcohol addiction, domestic abuse and/or mental health issues. By and large, it's schools and college staff that are on the frontline, dealing with these growing range of issues. However, increasingly other organisations are awakening to their responsibilities for safeguarding and the wellbeing being of the young people in their care – safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
This session discusses the challenges of information sharing, GDPR, Data Protection and expels the myths around record retention in schools, colleges and other settings such as sports clubs or charities. (100 words)
During his policing career Martin served in both uniform and detective roles in five UK police forces (including the Metropolitan Police). His police service in London included two significant periods with the Anti-Terrorist Branch at New Scotland Yard, where he specialised in the forensic examination of terrorist crime scenes. Martin later became a Senior Investigating Officer for cases of homicide and other serious crimes. As a Detective Superintendent Martin was the Director of Public Protection for Gwent Police, responsible for all aspects of safeguarding and child protection. As the Assistant Chief Constable for Gloucestershire Martin was Chair of the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA), managing the risks posed by violent and sexual offenders living in the community.
Martin’s final policing role was eight years as the Chief Constable of Dorset Police. During his tenure his officers and staff delivered eight consecutive years of crime reduction while achieving national ‘best in class’ public satisfaction across all aspects of operational service delivery and the highest levels of public confidence of any police force in England & Wales. His force also achieved the prestigious Sunday Times Top 75 Companies Award and the acclaimed Investors in People Award. Martin also worked closely with government ministers to address a wide range of national challenges in relation to serious and organised crime.
Martin is an experienced school governor in both primary and upper schools, with over 10 years experience in those roles. The upper school of which he is a Governor has been awarded two consecutive ‘Outstanding’ gradings from Ofsted. Martin is also a Director of a Multi-Academy Trust.
