Data from APJII (Asosiasi Pengelola Jasa Internet Indonesia/ The Association of Indonesian Internet Service Provider) shows that 51.8% of total population is the internet users, it means that 132.7 million out of 256.2 million of total population of Indonesian use internet. This number increased significantly from the data published in 2014, where only 34.9% of the total population of Indonesia used the internet (APJII, 2016). This significant rise in the internet usage has formed a new society, where there is no boundary between people all over the world, so that connectedness is unavoidable. Since there is a faster dissemination of information in this era, the creation, distribution, use, integration and manipulation of the information becomes significant.
In some points, the information society allows people to express their opinions and minds freely, which will lead to the movements in some areas, such as social and political fields. There must be differences in terms of the form, the scope, the context, and also the effect of the social and political movement due to the establishment of the internet. Kidd and McIntosh (2016) found that there was a relationship between social networking and social movements. It showed that information society, symbolized by the appearance of social networking play an important role in the change of the movement that involved massive people.
Eventually, information society will develop along with the new invention of the tools that support it, such as new media and social media that are believed will always be improved each time. The new feature and innovation in this technology will also give a vary form of interaction among social and political movements. Today’s dynamic online communication environment in Indonesia has enhanced social and political life.
This conference aims to explore and elaborate on the dynamics of social and political movements in information society era. Speakers will deliberate on four areas relevant to Indonesia: public administration and governance, communication and social networking, online public sphere and social change, regional and international relations. While this conference focuses on the social and political, it also welcomes research from inter-disciplinary areas.
