Complex climate changes are affecting the agriculture and water resources globally in the form of floods, droughts, and/or extreme precipitation events and can be the root of causing food deficiency, enhance poverty, and affecting whole socio-economic system. Agriculture serves as a safeguard of Pakistan’s economy by contributing about 19.5% in total GDP of the country. However, the agriculture-based economy of Pakistan is in danger due to shortage of water in some areas and flood events in other parts of the country due to climate change and lack of water management strategies. Therefore, it is a crucial need to manage the water and agricultural resources by adopting innovative technologies to ensure future food security.
Water is an important element for sustainable agriculture and its quantity and quality are serious issues to be considered. Secondly, investigating the impacts of climate and land cover changes on regional scale is of key importance for future planning and uplifting of agriculture sector. Similarly, proper monitoring of extreme climate events like floods and droughts may play a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse impacts of these events and harvesting their benefits.
Geo-informatics can play an important role in addressing the mentioned issues. The development of advanced techniques and methodologies in the area of Geo-informatics is beneficial for estimation of actual crop water requirements, water balance analysis and re-allocations, crop monitoring and yields forecasts, reflectance-based soil characteristics, gap-filling of missing weather information and providing strategies for climate risk mitigation.
The Agricultural Remote Sensing Lab (ARSL), affiliated with the National Center for GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA), located at Department of Irrigation and Drainage, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF), is working on the applications of Geo-informatics in the domains of Water, Soil and Crops for better agricultural production. The UAF is one the largest agricultural research institutes in the South Asia. It holds largest number of graduate students in the field of agriculture as major discipline than any other institution in Pakistan. are working on research projects aimed in-line with the objectives of the ARSL. The ARSL provides an excellent interdisciplinary research platform for the graduate students of UAF to polish their skills for further build their carrier in different organizations or exploring higher education opportunities.
Therefore, this conference will provide a forum for researchers, academia, and practitioners actively involved in water and agriculture management using latest geo-informatics techniques to share their experiences for improving the knowledge and skills of different stakeholders.
