Humanity as a whole and on a global scale has had to reflect on how it would proceed in the wake of a pandemic that has lasted longer than it has expected and has tested its ability to adapt to and invent new ways of being and moving. Performing artists in efforts to literally and aesthetically survive has had to learn to deal with the limited availability of and accessibility to the stage. While in previous times indoor and outdoor stages as well as open public spaces have been readily available to offer their work to audiences, now they are forced to deal with isolation and mediation. They are prompted to work with the threat of not having an audience as well as the lack of liveness where they have no choice but to perform through digitally generated spaces. This may be understood as the necessity of having to be dependent on encoded texts, not as in previous times where scripts, notations, and treatments were used for the preparation of performances, but texts as performance itself and as the space in which these artists must perform.
This trajectory is of course nothing new. Artists and scholars in various disciplines of the humanities and performing arts have in recent decades looked into and worked on transmedia and interdisciplinary projects. However, in the last one and half years, it has become apparent for artists and scholars as well as social activists, that such projects and new ways of looking at performance have become increasingly urgent. Studies and creative work on everyday life have also contributed to the shift in the paradigm by which modern civilization may view what performance means, developing concepts of such social constructs as gender, sexuality, race, and class as performative.
Such conceptual divides with which we have for centuries been familiar as theory/practice, text/performance, and art/ordinary life are inevitably questioned. Therefore, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia finds it relevant and urgent to create a forum in which artists, scholars, activists, and other practitioners may share and exchange ideas as well as initiate collaborative projects in the form of an International Conference on Culture and Performing Arts focusing on the issue of performance, in the broadest sense of the word, on THE STAGE AND BEYOND.
This conference aims at providing a forum in which scholars, artists, activists, and other practitioners in various disciplines across the globe may share and exchange ideas on the general topics of
