AI technologies are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and ubiquitous, and have great potential to transform many aspects of human society. However, much like the human users of these technologies, AI systems are not always predictable. Use of these systems in practice can lead to unintended consequences, high error or failure rates, and poor overall performance, even if the underlying system components are individually effective. The human-AI interaction community can provide potential solutions or mitigations, but this area of research must keep pace with the AI community and continue to innovate. A successful framework for the interaction between humans and AI will become a necessity as AI capabilities are incorporated into work, play, and everyday life. This workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners to share their work in the area of human-AI interaction, discuss progress towards research challenges, and chart a path forward for the field.
Submission Guidelines
The authors will be responsible for producing camera-ready copies of papers in PDF format, conforming to the ECAI2020 formatting guidelines for inclusion in the workshop proceedings of the conference. As usual for ECAI, submissions are NOT anonymous. According to the template, names of authors should be stated in the manuscript. Accepted papers will be published via arXiv. At least one author of each accepted paper is required to attend to present the contribution.
Workshop papers describing novel contributions in human-AI interaction are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. Relevant topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Frameworks and models for human-AI interaction
- Human-machine teaming; tolerance for autonomy; mixed initiative systems
- Cultural models and attitudes towards AI
- AI and theory of mind, social intelligence, individual differences
- Interpretable, explainable interfaces for AI developers, expert users, and the general public; communication of uncertainty
- Experimentation and user studies
- Principles of human-AI system engineering
- Human modeling and the use of AI; mental state assessment and representation
- Shared mental models; context-aware systems; knowledge representation
- Design patterns and principles; dark patterns and anti-patterns
- UX methodologies specific to design of AI systems; personas for users of AI systems
- Novel interfaces and interaction techniques; naturalistic user interfaces, dialogue-based approaches; immersive AI experiences
- Design and form factor of AI systems; personification; anthropomorphism
- Designing AI for expert users
- Visualization and visual analytics for AI;
- Measuring, benchmarking, and evaluating user-AI interaction
- Designing and measuring user trust in AI
- Case studies and real-world examples of human-centered AI systems
- Creative or artistic exploration of human-centered AI
