FABLEARN EUROPE / MAKE-ED 2021
FabLearn Europe / MakeEd invites submissions for the sixth conference in series to be held on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2021. The two-day virtual conference brings together international researchers, educators, designers and policy makers to disseminate ideas, best practices and resources to support children’s empowerment in the context of computing, design, and making in education, particularly positioning their work with children (kindergarten, K12). FabLearn Europe / MakeED is a sister conference of the global FabLearn conference that was initially organised at Stanford University (USA) in 2011. This year’s conference is hosted by the St.Gallen University of Teacher Education in Rorschach, Switzerland.
FabLearn Europe / MakeEd is seeking submissions for Research Papers, Work-in-Progress, Demos, and Workshops that focus on computing, design and making in education. We welcome submissions from multiple sectors and disciplines, including but not limited to academia, education, design, industry, and policy, aiming for transdisciplinary understanding. Key areas of interest are:
- Development of children’s competencies and skills in computing, design and making in different educational settings (e.g. classroom, museum, fablab).
- Innovation and entrepreneurship (e.g. child-led innovation), including innovative ideas for research and child-centered education with emerging technologies.
- Explorations and evaluations of computing, design and making in educational settings such as best practice case studies.
- Technological developments and advancements in technology education, including the Internet of Things, Extended Reality, Robotics, and Machine Learning.
- Theoretical perspectives and concerns on societal aspects of digital technologies in the context of learning, such as more inclusive, equal and sustainable futures.
All submissions are made through EasyChair as of February 10th, 2021 (link will appear soon). Please note that we use strict page limits for the different submission categories, and that the new single column ACM SIGCHI Paper Format has to be used. Submissions that do not follow these requirements will be desk-rejected. More information about the different tracks can be found below.
Key dates
- Submission deadline for all tracks: March 7, 2021 – 10:00 pm (AoE)
- Notification of acceptance: April 25, 2021
- Camera ready for all tracks: May 9, 2021 – 10:00 pm (AoE)
- Early registration (required for authors): May 9, 2021
- Virtual conference: June 2-3, 2021
Submission template
All submissions should use the new single column ACM SIGCHI Paper Format, specifically one of the following:
- MS Word
- LaTeX (Master Article Template – LaTeX)*
- LaTeX Overleaf (ACM Conference Proceedings “Master” Template)*
(*) Important note: in LaTeX or LaTex Overleaf, use the “manuscript” call to create a single column format, rather than “acmsmall”: \documentclass[sigconf, manuscript]{acmart}
Further instructions on the ACM Templates can be found on the ACM Article Template Page.
RESEARCH PAPERS
The Research Papers track is intended for those conducting research in the realm of computing, design, and making in educational settings (e.g. classroom, museum, fablab). All papers should:
- Report original work not previously published elsewhere
- Address any of the areas listed in the conference topics
- Cite relevant published work (see list of previous proceedings below)
- Clearly state the contribution(s) in the abstract and paper
Papers making one clear, significant contribution, are more likely to be accepted than those making several lesser contributions. Submissions must identify and cite relevant published work and explain how the paper furthers research within the field.
Please prepare your paper in a way that preserves anonymity of the authors. Content will be rigorously reviewed by members of the program committee. Each paper will receive feedback in the form of at least two peer review reports. The final selection will be made by the Program Committee based on the review reports. Submission information:
- Page limit: 9 to 12 pages (excluding references)
- Abstract of maximum 150 words
- Submissions should use the new single column ACM SIGCHI Paper Format
- Review process: double-blind peer review – anonymization required
- Submission deadline: March 7, 2021 – 10:00 pm (AoE)
All accepted FabLearn EU / MakeEd Research Papers are ACM archival publications and will be made available through the ACM Digital Library. Publication of an accepted Research Paper in the proceedings requires that at least one author of the paper registers for and participates in the virtual conference.
Previous proceedings:
Similarly with previous years, FabLearn Europe / MakeEd 2021 will edit a special issue in the Elsevier International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction, where extended versions of selected papers will be considered. Previous IJCCI Special Issues:
- IJCCI FabLearn Europe / MakeEd 2020
- IJCCI FabLearn Europe 2019
- IJCCI FabLearn Europe 2018
- IJCCI FabLearn Europe 2016
- IJCCI FabLearn Europe 2014
WORK-IN-PROGRESS
Work-in-Progress papers are intended for anyone (e.g., researchers, educators, designers, policy makers) with a keen interest in computing, design and making in educational settings, who wish to share and discuss their ideas, experiences and findings with the FabLearn and MakeEd community. Submission information:
- Page limit: 4 to 6 pages (including references)
- Abstract of maximum 150 words
- Submissions should use the new single column ACM SIGCHI Paper Format
- Selection process: single-blind peer review – anonymization not allowed
- Submission deadline: March 7, 2021 – 10:00 pm (AoE)
Submissions should include the author(s) name and affiliation – in other words, they are not blind. All Work-in-Progress papers will be peer reviewed. Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings published in the ACM Digital Library on the condition that at least one author of the paper registers for and participates in the virtual conference.
DEMOS
Demos are intended to showcase, among others, new digital tools, hands-on learning platforms, construction kits applicable to education, and student projects. The demos will be showcased virtually during the conference in dedicated sessions. Submission information:
- Page limit: 4 pages (including references)
- Abstract of maximum 150 words

WORKSHOPS
Workshops are interactive sessions to demonstrate and discuss best practices in computing, design and making in educational settings (e.g. classroom, museum, fablab). Of particular interest are hands-on learning activities with innovative technologies. Workshops should be designed to last 1 to 2 hours and will be open to attendance by conference participants. If a workshop targets teachers, this should be made clear along with why teachers would find attending the workshop valuable.
