Conference tracks
Academic track
Following an established tradition, FOSS4G organizes an Academic Track which will run over the days of the Conference. FOSS4G invites original research contributions scientific papers dealing with Open Software, Open Hardware, Open Science, Open Data, Spatial Data Sharing Systems, Participatory Mapping and Internet of Things.
All types of papers are welcome, such as on results achieved, case studies, work in progress, and demos. We discourage, however, mere presentations of technology or use cases without properly justifying originality against the scientific state of the art and without particular novelty.
The papers will be published in the Proceedings of the academic track, which are “The International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences”.
After the Conference, selected papers will be invited to be extended for peer-review with possible publication in the following:
- International Journal of Spatial Data Infrastructures Research (IJSDIR)
- Applied Geomatics
- Others (TBD)
Main conference track
All conferences has their own flair. We challenge the community to give us more knowledge about how the world of OSGeo can support the international sustainable development agenda - the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) alongside our the pillars of our OSGEO society. We seek to convene the best and brightest, not only to inform and educate those at our conference, but also to leave a lasting legacy in our host city. We have chosen these focus areas for applied presentations:
- Urban : Pollution in cities, Greening Transports, Urban Planning, Informal Settlements detection
- Coastal and Marine: Sensitivity Mapping, Sea level rise, Illegal Fishing, Pollution, Marine Spatial Planning
- Geospatial applications in Low speed internet countries= how to cope at the age of Cloud Based Geospatial technologies.
- Widening Access and Humanitarian Mapping: Community, technology and sustainable development.
- Drones: Aerial, Underwater, Open Source Workflow, Fleet management software
This year HOTOSM is amain partner to the conferene. This means that the "Widening Access and Humanitarian Mapping" focus area will be curated together with the HOT summit working group.
We are also interested in learning news from the pillars of our society. We therefore welcome presentations on the following themes:
- FOSS4G Software
- FOSS4G Adoption
- FOSS4G Use Cases & Applications
Workshops
Workshops represent the practical approach for participants. We know that many of the participants comes to increase their practical knowledge about open source GIS tools and methods.
In our call for workshops we want to build up a list of prospective workshops. This includes workshops proposed by the organizational committee as well as those coming from others.
Workshops should showcase current and emerging FOSSGIS technologies, foster skills development in the open geospatial domain and provide a direct interaction between our highly skilled OSGEO community and the public at large who want to acquire new skills.
Maps and Posters
We know that the point of presentation for many of the practitioners are a produced map or poster. We would like our conference to host as many as possible of these products. Maps and posters should showcase creative approaches to conveying ideas and concepts aligned with our conference themes and demonstrate the power and versatility of software produced within the OSGEO community.
Submission Guidelines
Academic track
- At the first step authors are invited to submit abstracts written in English comprising 500-800 words and containing sufficient details for evaluation (including the approach, results, concepts, reasons why it should be considered and why it would be interesting for the audience).
- The contributions are accepted on the abstract blind review process. Submitted abstracts will be refereed for quality, originality and relevance by the Scientific Committee. Authors will receive feedback and suggestions for improvement to their papers to be submitted in step two.
- If the abstract is accepted the authors are invited to submit the corresponding paper dealing with original and unpublished research.
- The papers will be published in the Proceedings of the GeoForAll Track, which are “The International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences”. Please pay attention that accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings provided at least one author is registered for the Conference before the early registration date. The Proceedings will be available at the first day of the Conference. All papers should be formatted as per ISPRS author's guidelines. (download here the templates: odt, docx and pdf).
Main conference
Presenters are invited to submit abstracts written in English comprising 200-400 words and containing sufficient details for evaluation (including the approach, technology, results, concepts, reasons why it should be considered and why it would be interesting for the audience).
Presentations in this category will be regular talks (20 minutes plus 5 minutes for Q&A). We expect to have 150-200 talks selected through this call. The selected presentations will be organized into approximately 6 parallel tracks. We aim at keeping related presentations together.
Projectors will be available for the presentation. The presenters are advised not to rely on access to internet for their presentations.
A big conference like this requires timeliness from the presenter. This means that the presentation starts on time and ends after no more than 25 minutes. Empty slots will not lead to rescheduling of talks.
Attendance of presenters will be confirmed before the conference.
Workshops
Workshops are expected range from 2 hours to two full days. We would like the proposal to include a short description (200-400) of how the proposed activity should be carried out. Be clear about what the participant will take home with regards to knowledge and skills.
Workshops should not rely on a stable internett. Local networks can be installed to facilitate for local traffic.
The proposal must include a list of required facilitations like network, computers and software. The form for proposals will include checklists which the proponent will have to fill in.
Maps and posters
This call for maps and posters is made so that the program committee can have a decision basis for selecting posters and maps. We do not expect posters and maps to be presented to us fully developed at this stage. But we would expect sketches and a short description on the following:
- What the map/poster communicates
- Why it is relevant for FOSS4G 2018
- Who is behind the production
All posters and maps should fit within the following external size:
- A0: 84.1 cm x 118.9cm (33.11" x 46.81")
The presenter should bring the map or poster preprinted to the venue at lates in the morning of the conference start. One of the authors of the map/poster should be available throughout the conference.
