Virtual (Online) International Conference on the Status of Women
Women account for 50% and 70% of the world’s population that fall into the category of the extremely poor. Although most developed countries implement established social safety nets that benefit the eligible poor, women in those societies are still overrepresented among the poor. In developing countries, the stark reality is even worse. Therefore, to understand the nature, extent and impact of poverty in any society, it is highly essential to study and understand the status of women in any society. However, poverty is not the only social problem that disproportionately affect women in our world. So too is violence, which in many significant respects exacerbates the plight of poor women. Available estimates indicate that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner (not including sexual harassment) at some point in their lives. That number is higher when national numbers are examined. Those numbers reveal that, in some countries, up to 70 percent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime. The impact of these realities on women cannot be overemphasized. For example, female victims of physical or sexual intimate partner violence tend to report higher rates of mental health problems. Furthermore, studies have shown that 58% (that is, 50,000) of 87,000 women that were intentionally killed globally in 2017 were killed by their intimate partners or family members. Against this background, this interdisciplinary conference will provide participants an opportunity and platform to examine the status of women in our world and explore potential approaches to improve the circumstances of women in communities around the world.
