INTRODUCTION
The Financial Inclusion Africa Research Conference intends to facilitate the narrowing and final elimination of the financial exclusion of many ordinary women and men from both the villages and urban centers of Africa and beyond. It aims to promote sustainable lives of the many African people that have such a limited role in their own economies because they do no take part in their economies financially. Financial exclusion reinforces poverty and inequality which have become the two evils that beset the continent of Africa and its peoples, but it also helps perpetuate marginalization.
Despite the massive natural and human resources that characterize the continent, Africa continues to experience deep poverty and remains amongst the world’s poorest. Although people participate in the cash-based economy, they do so to a very limited extent because they buy cash as many still do not have for example a bank card to transact with. Having a bank account is something that can be easily taken for granted in certain situations. However, the reality is that there are so many people that do not have access to financial institutions and the services they offer. They are referred to as unbanked sections of the population. These are people whose lives and livelihoods are not connected to the modern economic systems. While it is a choice for some, for others it is a situation imposed by their socioeconomic conditions.
The Financial Inclusion Africa recognizes the role financial inclusion can have on changing the lives of people by making them part of the financial movement. To ensure that ordinary people have for example a bank account, pension fund, or some form of insurance to provide security against calamities that befall them in their daily lives is fundamental to addressing marginalization, poverty, and inequality. When people have financial resources, isolation, and vulnerability among other things can become history.
To achieve these noble objectives, it is critical that we establish for example clear pathways that will enable inclusion. Such pathways should indeed start with the simple individual and small business banking accounts and advance to the highest forms of transactions such as foreign investments. Locally, such activities have the potential to promote the required infrastructure such as ATMs.
Through this Conference, Financial Inclusion Africa hopes to identify areas that stand to benefit the ideal of financial inclusion both in terms of policies and projects. It is therefore that the following conference themes shall lend support to this objective:
