Digital Humans and the Metaverse (Workshop @ AVI 2022)
Progress on a business and technology front is pushing toward a digitally-led convergence of physical, virtual and social domains - the so-called ‘Metaverse’. In truth, none of us really know what the Metaverse, or network of ‘Metaverses’ even, will look like beyond the current marketing hype. What we can say is that it will likely require a convergence of technologies that include immersive (e.g., Augmented and Virtual Reality), Artificial Intelligence, game engines, digital personas, blockchain etc. that will translate to a digital and social economy and be interoperable across platforms. Unsurprisingly, the Metaverse will sit at the forefront of Advanced Visual Interfaces.
This convergence of technological, social and economic raises significant challenges in relation to both the environments of interaction and how we, as humans, are represented, act and interact within them. In that context, the purpose of this workshop is to explore conceptions of the Metaverse, the digital humans that may populate it and the research challenges and opportunities that arise from these conceptions.
List of Topics
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the conception, design, implementation and evaluation of aspects of the Metaverse such as:
- Immersive technology (inc. haptics, motion capture etc.) and Artificial Intelligence.
- The representation of humans.
- Action and interaction.
- Reputation and identity.
- Community, collaboration and networking.
- Ownership and property.
- Data and security.
- Time and space.
- Interoperability of technologies
Workshop Format
The workshop will take the form of a series of short participant presentations (i.e., PechaKucha style), followed by discussion and a collaborative work(shop) session where design thinking/creative techniques will be used to capture issues, challenges, opportunities etc.
This format is intended to help develop and cement a community of interest.
