Dying.dialogues -
A collaboration between the Health Design Studio (OCAD U) & Taboo Health
January 29, 2022, Toronto, Canada
Dying.dialogues is a symposium on design and fragility, death, dying, loss, and grief, running in conjunction with DesignTO, as part of Dying.series. Dying.dialogues invites participants to share and reflect on design practice as it relates to the process of moving towards death and through grief - whether these be speculative exploratory works, community engagements, or interventions for specific groups or circumstances. The symposium will engage across multiple domains, including - designers, artists, scholars, health care practitioners and the wider public. These dialogues are an opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives and participate in open conversations about fragility, death, dying, loss, grief, and design.
Over the past two years, the Dying. series has attracted over 5000 attendees, 26 speakers, including 4 opening and keynote speakers in the disciplines of design and healthcare and 29 exhibiting artists and designers. In its fourth year, Dying. will continue to offer an opportunity to creatively engage in conversation about fragility, death, dying, loss, grief through the lens of art and design.
This year we are inviting contributions on fragility, death, dying, loss, and grief, under the following themes:
- Design practice: communication materials, products, services, spaces for fragility, death, dying, loss, and grief
- Healthcare practice and research: palliative care, MAID, hospice, grief, supportive and non-pharmacological care
- Design research: knowledge creation, knowledge mobilisation, public engagement, public art on fragility, death, dying, loss, grief
- Designing for loss and grief more broadly: e.g. climate change, Black Lives Matter, mass acts of violence, COVID-19
We particularly invite works within these themes that address issues of equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
Formats:
We are open to multiple formats, examples include: talks, panels, workshops, posters, immersive arts and music, installations/interactive exhibits,
This year we will be hosting up to 2 panels and 3 workshops.
The tentative date for the symposium is Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 8am-5pm (or distributed over several days and times if virtual). If permitted by pandemic protocols, the symposium will be held in downtown Toronto. We will plan for virtual as well as in person, with an option to attend virtually if desired. We reserve the right to modify dates, times or delivery methods as required.
During DesignTO (January 21 - 30, 2022) there will be a number of events under the Dying. series with an opportunity to participate in other exhibits.
