2022 Carolinas Women in Computing Conference (CWIC)
CWIC is a leadership and professional development conference designed to bring together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, researchers, and industry professionals in computing.
The goal of CWIC is to encourage the participation of women in computing by providing professional and social support. The conference will feature talks and panels by highly successful technical women. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to participate through poster presentations, lightning talks or focused panels. Perhaps, more importantly, it is an opportunity to network with successful technical women from academia, government, and industry, and fellow students. A career fair with some local and regional companies will be included in the event. CWIC is affiliated with ACM-W.
On April 8-9, 2022, the 2022 CWIC conference will be held at the University of North Carolina Wilmington main campus, hosted by the Department of Computer Science, the Program in Information Technology, and the Digital Arts Program.
Submission Types
CWIC welcomes four types of contributions:
- Poster Submissions
- Paper Submissions
- Demo Submissions
- Workshop Submissions
Overview
This year, the ACM CWIC 2022 will hold the 6th biennial conference. It is open to anyone interested in technology and computing, from researchers to students, enthusiasts, and professionals. The purpose of the research presentations is to share and stimulate innovative and creative solutions to challenging computing problems.
Presenting a paper, demo, poster or conducting a workshop is a great way to get feedback on work that has not yet been published. Papers, demos, posters and workshops will be an integral part of the conference, with sessions for interactive discussion between presenters and attendees for at least two days, plus a fast-forward presentation track where authors can orally present a brief summary of their work to all conference attendees. Note that, in order to maintain interactive and exciting paper, demo, workshop and poster presentations, we require at least one presenter per accepted paper, workshop, demo and poster to register for the conference.
The best paper, best demonstration and the best poster presentation will be selected by a jury at the conference. Submissions are open to anyone interested in computing and technology— researchers, students, hobbyists, professionals, or anyone else. The judging criteria are novelty, sophistication and elaboration, relevance of the topic, and aesthetics. The final score will be the combination of the expert judges’ score plus the audience scores. The winning teams will be given the best paper, demo or poster certificates.
Research Demos: Participants need to create and submit an original project. This may include any computing systems that CWIC attendants can run with their own devices or with devices that you provide. You have to create an environment that will allow people to interact or observe a certain topic related to computing and technology. Selected demo submissions will be required to provide a runnable demonstration of their work using some standard hardware.
Poster Presentations: Participants can describe recently completed work, highly relevant results of work in progress, or successful systems and applications, in all areas related to computing and technology. Here is a sample template https://people.uncw.edu/pattersonl/cwic/CWIC_PosterTemplate.potx
Papers:
Each research paper should be a contribution covering one or more of four styles of papers:
- Empiracal Research or Methodological papers
- Application or Tools papers
- System papers
- Literature Research or Survey Results
Workshop Proposal: We invite teams or individuals interested in organizing a workshop to submit proposals. Workshops are intended to bring together researchers, developers, technology providers, practicitioners and users. Workshops may target a specific application area, specific research area, or a topic of general interest. Workshops are intended to be interactive. Workshops may include a curated panel.
Suggested Areas/Topics for all types of submissions:
Submissions will be considered on any topic related to Computer Science included but not limited to the following topics:
- Computer Vision
- Biometrics
- Virtual and Augmented Reality (Extended reality)

Submission Guidelines
All submissions must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference.
Submission site opens on February 1st, 2022 and close on February 18th, 2022.
Demo and Poster Submissions Guidelines:
- Two-Page Abstract Paper : Authors must submit a short paper of two pages, with a description of the solution, details about software developed, a brief description of the closest related work and how your system is novel, and a description of how you iterated upon the design.
- Paper format should use the following ACM Proceedings Template found at https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template
- The acm link above has a word template, latex template (as well as an overleaf template). (The templates should have a two column format).
- Video: Authors will also submit a video that presents the solution to the public, including an explanation of the equipment, software, and interaction techniques used to solve the problem. If your submission is accepted, the video will be made publicly available. Videos should have a length of approximately 4 minutes and should include the title along with the names and affiliations of the team members. The submitted file should be a high-quality compressed video with a size of no more than 300 MB and submitted via the submission system or a link to an unlisted youtube video/alike.
