The BSU Graduate Research Workshop is an annual event hosted by the graduate school at Bowie State University. The objectives of the workshop are to help graduate students to enhance their research and communication skills, and to better understand how to prepare for science and educational careers in a global workforce. Towards this end, the general format for the one (1) day workshop will include oral presentations. Other workshop activities include:
- Understanding STEM careers in a global context and identifying international research and education opportunities.
- A panel discussion on current research topic in academia and industry.
- Building research skills and developing focus on employment searches and retention.
This year's event is virtual online only. The virtual model will provide an excellent platform for scholars to present their research on various topics. A panel of distinguished researchers will review each abstract and presentation. This event will culminate with an award ceremony and certificates.
Submission Guidelines
Submission of abstracts for review must also adhere to the following guidelines:
- Only one (1) 3000 character limit abstract can be submitted per student. However, a student may be listed as a co-author on a second abstract.
- Students working in the same lab must independently submit original abstracts. Identical abstracts submitted by different students will be automatically rejected.
- The primary author will present the project during the Workshop. NO co-presentations are allowed.
- Approval must be obtained from all co-authors listed on the abstract. Failure to do so will result in the immediate rejection of the abstract.
- Students must obtain approval from faculty advisor(s)/research mentor(s) before submitting the abstract. Failure to do so will result in the immediate rejection of the abstract.
- Abstracts must be written by the student and reviewed by the faculty or research mentor.
- Abstracts must adhere to the highest quality standards, with correct grammar, spelling and sentence structure, i.e., with editing and proofreading prior to submission.
- All GRA recruited by the graduate school is required to present
- All doctoral students who have completed their comprehensive exam (or proposal defense) are required to present
- MS thesis students are required to present
- All graduate students who are working on individual research grants from faculty are invited to present
- All graduate students who are working in individual research laboratories and course projects are invited to present/showcase their research
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. All paper submissions will be reviewed for:
- Originality and innovation
- Scientific content supported by quantitative information and references
- Merit of the research
- Quality of written content
- Adherence to guidelines and format

- Education
- Computer Sciences (AI, VR, AR, XR, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Data Visualization, Software Engineering, etc.)
- Information Management
- Science Education
- Mathematics Education

- Abstract Submission/Registration Deadline Friday April 2, 2021, at Midnight (EST)
By submitting your abstract for registration, you are agreeing to have your image and/or work used for university's related presentations.
- All abstracts MUST INCLUDE the following:
Hypothesis or statement about the problem being investigated and why the research is important
Methods and controls;
Results and discussion of findings;
Conclusions, future research, and key references;
Acknowledgement of funder(s); and Academic mentor

Abstract Acceptance Notifications
***Once an abstract has been received, the most efficient means of communication and notification of status will be by email. Therefore, it is very important that a valid and current email address be on record for all candidates.
***Notifications as to whether or not your abstract has been accepted for presentation will be emailed by Friday April 9, 2021.
