APAN is an annual symposium that aims to facilitate the growth of auditory neuroscience, particularly research on computations, circuits and neural systems supporting auditory perception and cognition.
Since our first meeting in 2003, APAN has provided an opportunity for young and established researchers to network, discuss issues of common interest, and share their latest findings before the Society for Neuroscience meeting. As always, our mandate is to showcase the latest, unpublished work in our field, support the professional development of our younger members, and honor the career achievements of an established member of our community through a keynote lecture. We look forward to the future when we can all pack into a hotel ballroom for talks, posters, animated discussions, and well-deserved libations. Even though SfN2021 is planning to offer some in-person events in Chicago, the APAN2021 organizers decided that providing a platform for the worldwide auditory neuroscience community is our highest priority. An in-person event (even a hybrid model) would disenfranchise too many researchers who are not able/willing to travel and gather indoors; thus, we have opted to host the meeting as a free, two-day online event, similar to the 2020 meeting. Although we will miss the chance to see each other in three dimensions, the online format expands the reach of APAN to those who would not otherwise attend the in-person event (e.g., last year we had 1060 attendees!). So, shake off that online conference fatigue and register for APAN2021 to catch up on the latest developments in auditory neuroscience research and share your discoveries with our global community.
APAN is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for scientific communication. Women and under-represented minorities are strongly encouraged to register for the conference, submit research abstracts and apply for the Young Investigator Spotlight award.
For everyone attending APAN (whether or not you are submitting an abstract)
- The most current and detailed information on the APAN2021 conference (as well as info on prior conferences) can always be found on the main website - https://www.med.upenn.edu/apan/
- APAN will be held online on November 4-5, from approximately 10AM - 4PM, Eastern Daylight Time (details to follow).
- Registration is free but mandatory. You will not be able to access the online conference unless you register at https://www.med.upenn.edu/apan/registration.html
- Please register early (how about now?). The more we know about our attendees, the better we can plan a good user experience at the virtual conference. It only takes a minute.
- The registration deadline is November 2, 2021.
For Young Investigator Spotlight applicants
- The Young Investigator Spotlight (YIS) is an opportunity for Principal Investigators who have had an independent position for 2-7 years to present 25-minute spotlight talk during the meeting. We wish to particularly encourage submissions from women, BIPOC, and other historically minoritized faculty applicants.
- YIS applications should be submitted by email, not through Easy Chair. See here for detailed instructions: https://www.med.upenn.edu/apan/young-investigator-spotlight.html
- YIS applicants are also welcome to submit a research abstract as presenting author.
- The YIS application deadline is August 30, 2021.
For submissions of research abstracts
- Presentations will take the form of short talks, poster teaser talks, and posters. The APAN Organizing Committee will blindly evaluate submitted abstracts and select a small subset of submissions for short "podium" presentations or brief pre-recorded poster teasers that will be presented to all attendees. Posters will be hosted online, along with indexed poster search features, multi-media features, and the option for online real-time discussion via the presenting author's videoconferencing service.
- Abstracts can be submitted through this website, using the abstract submission link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=apan2021.
- Authors may be listed on multiple submissions but may be the presenting author for only one abstract.
- We encourage you to submit a research abstract in the broad themes of systems, cognitive and computational auditory neuroscience, that touch on any of the following topics:
- auditory memory and cognition
- auditory perceptual disorders
- brain processing of speech and language
- correlates of auditory behavior/perception
- cross-species comparisons
- hierarchical sensory organization
- multisensory processes
- neural coding
- neuroethology and communication
- novel neurotechnologies
- subcortical auditory processing
- thalamocortical circuitry and function
- Don't forget to also register at the APAN website: https://www.med.upenn.edu/apan/registration.html. Submitting an abstract does not register you for the conference.
- The abstract submission deadline is August 30, 2021.
