Crisis management has enjoyed growing interest for the last twenty years, due in particular to the cyclical upheavals in the environment in which companies, brands and consumers operate. The health crisis we are going through today is the perfect example. It sheds light on the flaws and weaknesses of our development and management models.
But how do you distinguish a crisis from a simple incident? The crisis is not the same from one department to another, from one Business Unit to another, or even from one country to another. So, in the absence of a consensual definition, it is essential to insist on certain common defining criteria. The notion of exception is an often-used transversal element. This characteristic assumes that exceptional events cannot be managed using the usual techniques, resources and procedures. This exceptional nature of situations, which departs from traditional procedures, seems to be a constant in attempts to define the notion of crisis inspired by multiple experiences, with companies from very different sectors and various audiences. However, accepting the exceptional and avoiding the inhibition that it arouses depends on an ability to grasp the notion of complexity (in the sense of Edgar Morin, 2005) and an appetite for uncertainty that does not exist (Combalbert, 2012).
Companies are regularly exposed to a plethora of crises (financial, environmental, economic, social, health, etc.) that are not always easy to anticipate or manage. Faced with this situation, these companies can no longer continue to operate according to the usual models that have proved their worth in the past as long as each crisis brings with it its share of surprise, urgency, uncertainty, gravity, etc.
What are the possibilities for companies and brands in such a context, which is obviously more complex? Godet (1991) in his prospective studies gives us three possible strategies: the "ostrich" strategy which corresponds to a passive attitude while waiting for the storm to pass; the "firefighter" strategy which refers to a process of adaptation to the situation and the "watch" strategy which corresponds to a proactive process which scrupulously scrutinizes the future to decide on the best path to take. Today's companies, probably more exposed to crisis situations, must not only be ready to constantly adapt their strategy according to the evolution of their environment, but above all be able to shape adjustment models and modes of regulation capable of giving a certain agility to their structures.
Agility can be defined according to Sharifi and Zhang (1999) as "The ability to face unforeseen challenges, to survive unprecedented threats posed by the economic environment and to take advantage of changes and opportunities". This concept of agility therefore refers to a desire to act, to be reactive (or even to take risks) in a time of crisis where reorientation and determination are required.
The crisis is a moment of truth during which companies but also their customers reveal themselves: their ability to apprehend the unexpected, their ability to adapt their behavior, their resilience to resume normal activity and continue to consume, but above all their will to preserve confidence in brands and companies…, so many marks of solidity and relevance in the face of the unforeseen or the unthinkable.
An important question that can be raised in this particular context relates to the extent to which research and marketing practices provide answers to the challenges raised by companies in such situations in relation to their stakeholders and in particular their customers.
This international congress is therefore intended to be a hub of academic and professional reflection, experience sharing, an opportunity to express opinions and proposals that can prepare us to better understand and manage crisis situations.
The central theme of this sixth congress of the Moroccan Marketing Association is "Companies, brands and consumers facing crises: between fragility and agility", The authors can deal with several other aspects related to marketing, management, commercial law and business, customer relationship management, social responsibility, sustainable development, competitiveness, ethics, quality, innovation, artificial intelligence, digitalization, new technologies, etc.
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:
