Muscat, Oman’s capital, sits on the Gulf of Oman and is flanked by the sea on the north, and the desert and the rugged Hajar Mountains to the south and west. The beauty of Muscat, and indeed, all of Oman, lies in the combination of the traditional and the modern. Muscat’s urban landscape shares upscale shopping malls with low-lying buildings interspersed with ancient forts and castles. The city also has numerous beautiful mosques, including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque. Notable among the more modern buildings in Muscat is the Royal Opera House.
