Digital humanities (DH) stands at the intersection of computing and the humanities. DH involve collaborative transdisciplinary research, bringing digital tools and methods to the study of the humanities. DH consider new ways of teaching and researching, while also critiquing how these impact cultural heritage and digital culture.
As such, DH is an important growing research field for which natural language processing (NLP) has much to offer. Language processing may enable researchers to investigate a large amount of data, according to many different aspects proper to each research area.
There are many NLP techniques that can provide useful help for the study of historical texts, literature and any human discourse that is under investigation in the Humanities (such as philosophy, history of arts, geography, law, linguistics, and other areas), both written or spoken.
This workshop collocated with PROPOR 2022 has the goal of bringing together researchers of both research traditions (humanities and computational linguists), with interests in multi- and cross-lingual approaches, and also those with interests in Portuguese language variants and dialects (including the language varieties of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, São Tomé, Macau or Galiza). There are many NLP techniques that can provide useful help for the study of historical texts, literature and any human discourse that is under investigation in the Humanities (such as philosophy, history of arts, geography, law, linguistics, and other areas), both written or spoken.
The workshop accepts contributions on methods useful for DH research, or applications using them, including but not limited to:
- Keywords and terminology extraction
- Digital philology, critical editions production and textual criticism
- Lexical distribution and computational text analysis
- Document clustering and classification
- Topic modelling
- Word sense disambiguation
- Named entity recognition
- Cross-lingual NLP methods
- Pronunciation / sonic patterns
- Sentiment analysis
- Corpus visualization
- Use and construction of ontologies and thesauri
- Linked data
- Computational stylometry, authorship attribution and profiling
- Multimodal approaches to DH (e.g., combining text, speech, image analysis)
- Historical lexicography and lexicology
- Historical and diachronic corpora processing
- Multilingual analysis of diachronic/historical corpora
- Resources and encoding of digital collections
- Analysis and recognition of language variants and dialects
