New trends in Artificial Intelligence for Higher Education in the COVID-19 era:Emerging Technologies, Challenges, and Pedagogy-informed Applications
Scope and Topics
The Special Issue on “New trends in Artificial Intelligence for Higher Education in the COVID-19 era: Emerging Technologies, Challenges, and Pedagogy-informed Applications” presents current research aimed at understanding how Education will be shaped by emerging information technologies. The focus is not only at presenting advances of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Education but also at presenting results of how Educational practices and/or pedagogies are being complemented or even reshaped by AI in higher education. This special issue aims at disseminating innovations, knowledge, and lessons learned during the abrupt changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to help the readership become familiar with new pedagogical-informed, AI-driven educational practices that have emerged or were innovated during this time. In particular, we would like to compile a set of papers that show how the disruption of the COVID-19 has changed the way we teach at university level. Our vision is geared towards documenting the challenges faced by Education at this level and the novel pedagogical approaches afforded by AI technologies. We are calling for papers addressing (but not limited to) one or several of the following questions:

How are state-of-the-art AI technologies driving new approaches for learning?

Are emerging technologies (wearables, virtual/augmented reality, 3D printing, drones, and robots, among others) in combination with AI, driving a change in well-established pedagogical practices?

What are the challenges that emerging technologies pose to students, teachers, and other stakeholders?
-
How will these emerging technologies support education in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains?
-
What are the ethical considerations that new technologies are overseeing?
-
How can emerging technologies be blended to develop new and effective pedagogies?
-
What is the future of Education, and what is the role of new technologies?
The special issue welcomes research and viewpoint papers as described in the IJAIED website. We encourage authors to present their research results or work in progress that address the previous questions but with an emphasis on presenting pedagogically-inspired Educational innovations driven by AI in the following

The papers should hold a significant novelty in the research design, methodologies, and results in their theoretical or practical applications to the listed areas of interest for publication in this issue.
Guest Editors
Genaro Rebolledo-Mendez (PhD), Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico: g.rebolledo@tec.mx. Genaro obtained his MSc and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Systems and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. Genaro has been an active faculty member in academic institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Mexico. In the United Kingdom, he was a full-time researcher at both the London Knowledge Lab, University College London (UCL) and the Serious Games Institute, Coventry University. In Mexico, he was a full-time researcher and Dean of the Informatics Department at the Universidad Veracruzana as well as a member of Mexico’s National Research System (SNI I). He has co-authored several publications in the area of educational technology and is a member of the Editorial Committee of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education. Genaro has collaborated with educational and technological innovation projects with industry and academic partners. Currently, he is a Mentor in the Writing Lab, Campus Monterrey, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico.
Rose Luckin (PhD), is Professor of Learner Centred Design at the UCL Knowledge Lab in London. Her research involves the design and evaluation of educational technology using theories from the learning sciences and techniques from Artificial Intelligence (AI). She has a particular interest in using AI to open up the 'black box' of learning to show teachers and students the detail of their progress intellectually, emotionally and socially. Rose is also Director of EDUCATE, a London hub for Educational Technology StartUps, researchers and educators to work together on the development of evidence-informed Educational Technology. Rose was named on the Seldon List 2017 as one of the 20 most influential people in Education. She is a UFI charity trustee, a governor and trustee of St Paul's school in London and a governor of the Self-Managed Learning College in Brighton. She has taught in the state secondary, Further Education and Higher Education sectors, and she was previously Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at the University of Sussex.
Samira Hosseini (PhD), Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico: samira.hosseini@tec.mx. Samira Hosseini obtained her BSc degree in Applied Physics from the University of North Tehran, Iran, and her MSc degree in Polymer Chemistry and a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She served as a postdoctoral associate at Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico while holding a postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA. Currently, she is Director of Writing Lab in the Center for Educational Innovation at Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico. She also holds the position of Research Professor at the School of Engineering and Sciences, Tecnologico de Monterrey. She is the author/co-author of more than 50 scientific publications, 22 book chapters and is the inventor/co-inventor of 6 intellectual properties. Samira is the recipient of the Hero of the Year award for her outstanding achievements at Writing Lab. Moreover, two intellectual properties proposed by her research team were selected for the Best Invention of the Year award. She is a member of the Mexican National Academy of Researchers (level one) and is on the Editorial Board of different international journals.
Olga C. Santos (PhD), Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Spain: ocsantos@dia.uned.es. Olga C. Santos is currently an Associate Professor with the Artificial Intelligence Department, UNED, Spain, and the Research and Development Technical Manager of the aDeNu Research Group. Her current research interests include combining artificial intelligence with ambient intelligence and Internet of Things to support personalized affective psychomotor learning that ubiquitously and dynamically adapt to the evolving user needs. She has participated in 16 research projects (UE, National), published over 150 papers, and co-chaired several workshop series (TUMAS-A, RecSysTEL/EdRecSys, PALE, and RSyL) and conferences (AIED, EDM, UMAP, and EC-TEL). She received the Best Doctoral Thesis Award by the IEEE Spanish Chapter of the Education Society and the 2014 Young Researcher Award of the IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technology.
Gwanggil Jeon (PhD), Incheon National University, South Korea: gjeon@inu.ac.kr. Gwanggil Jeon received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. (summa cum laude) degrees from the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, in 2003, 2005, and 2008, respectively. From 2009.09 to 2011.08, he was with the School of Information Technology and Engineering, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ON, Canada, as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. From 2011.09 to 2012.02, he was with the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University, Niigata, Japan, as an Assistant Professor. From 2014.12 to 2015.02 and 2015.06 to 2015.07, he was a Visiting Scholar at Centre de Mathématiques et Leurs Applications (CMLA), École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay (ENS-Cachan), France. From 2019 to 2020, he was a Prestigious Visiting Professor at Dipartimento di Informatica, Università degli Studi di Milano Statale, Italy. He is currently a Full Professor at Xidian University, Xi’an, China and at Incheon National University, Incheon, Korea. He was a Visiting Professor at Sichuan University, China, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain, Xinjiang University, China, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand, and University of Burgundy, Dijon, France. Dr. Jeon is an Associate Editor of Sustainable Cities and Society, IEEE Access, Real-Time Image Processing, Journal of System Architecture, and MDPI Remote Sensing. Dr. Jeon was a recipient of the IEEE Chester Sall Award in 2007 and the ETRI Journal Paper Award in 2008.
