Call for Proposals
General Guidelines/Requirements
- This year’s Big 12 Teaching & Learning conference theme is “Advancing Student Learning & Retention.” Consistent with this theme, we invite proposals focusing on:
- Classroom-level interventions enhancing student learning
- Institution and beyond interventions enhancing student learning
- Assessment of Student Learning
- Inclusive Teaching Practices
- Educational Research on Teaching & Student Learning (Research to Practice)
- Proposals should clearly align to one of the conference tracks and be targeted to meet the professional development needs of college and/or university faculty, assessment coordinators, administration, staff, and students.
- Proposals should fall into the format categories of oral presentation, workshop, or poster presentation.
- Oral presentations should be formatted with no more than 20-30 minutes of presentation and 20-30 minutes of activity and/or discussion. We also seek submissions for a lightning-round oral session and these presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes. Please note in the text of your abstract submission if you would be willing to be selected for either oral presentation format.
- Workshop formats are and 90-minutes and should encourage participant engagement, tangible take-aways and evidence of best practice.
- Poster format should be up to 40in x 60in. Presenters will be expected to be at their poster for discussion during the scheduled poster event.
Learning Objectives
For all oral and workshop presentation submission types, you will be asked to provide three to five specific learning objectives that the participants will achieve from your proposed session. Learning objectives, or learning outcomes, are statements that clearly describe what the participants are expected to learn and how participants can apply this knowledge in practice or other professional contexts as a result of having attended an educational program or activity. These must be observable and measurable.
Oral Presentation Submissions
Proposals for 55-minute oral sessions that explore an innovation, best practice or research-to-practice are invited. Oral presentations should be formatted with no more than 20-30 minutes of presentation and 20-30 minutes of activity and/or discussion.

Lightning Round Oral Presentation Submissions
Proposals for 15-minute oral sessions that showcase research, innovation, or best practice are invited. Lightning Round Oral presentations should be formatted with 12 minutes of presentations with 3 minutes for questions.

Workshop Submissions
Proposals for workshops that explore a best practice or innovation in-depth and provides participants with practical applications and discussion are invited. The duration of each conference workshop is 90 minutes with the expectations of active participant engagement and discussion.

- Brief description of teaching strategies and workshop activities that will be employed (not included in word count)
- Ideal number of attendees (not included in word count)
Poster Presentation Submissions
Proposals for poster presentations that showcase research, innovation, or best practice are invited. Presenters are expected to be at their poster during the poster session to engage in discussion with conference participants. Poster format should be 40in x 60in printed.
