Desirable Changes toward Equitable Outcomes
Embodying anti-racist behaviors and taking concrete actions to achieve equitable outcomes, are worthy goals to expect for learning, or to observe within faculty culture, among students, in syllabi and institutional policies. Questions we ask ourselves include: In what ways is each student prepared for learning activities in college? Inside or outside the classroom, how could we focus appropriately upon those who have been minoritized, excluded, or disadvantaged? Even if changes in perspective lead to new attitudes, these can be very hard to reveal. How might instructors and educators determine if those desirable changes are occurring? Moving beyond equitable outcomes, how can we move to anti-racist assessment practices?
The Online Fall Forum provides an opportunity for faculty, administrators, and staff to share in conversations centered on evidence-based learning assessment to enhance student learning and development. Proposals that address the conference theme, "Desirable Changes toward Equitable Outcomes," are encouraged but not required. Proposals are due by September 1, 2020.
Conference Session Types (you may submit a presentation for any of the following):
Full Presentation sessions (45 minutes)
Traditional format – These sessions provide an extensive examination of assessment issues, processes, or research results. Hands-on participation is encouraged but not required. Presentations should total no more than 30 minutes to allow time for questions and conversation.
"How do I assess this?" solution sessions (45 minutes, continuous)
Bring a thorny assessment question or challenge to share with assessment professionals feedback and experienced perspective. Think of this as a "problem-solving" or "mini-consulting" opportunity.
If interested, please propose a specific challenge now, including brief strategies you have tried, or a general theme that has been challenging for assessment more generally. To propose your challenge for consideration, follow this google link https://forms.gle/oZsYCPngD97WvHxV7
"One Particular Idea" (10 - 12 minutes)
Shorter than typical presentations, "One Particular Idea" presentations should focus on exploring a single focused topic or angle. They can either present a focused assessment project or a single unique theme. "One Particular Idea" proposals will be grouped (as much as possible) with one or two other similar plans, and (depending on scheduling) have limited time (3-5 minutes) for questions and comments
Submission Guidelines
NEean welcomes proposals that reflect a range of assessment topics including:
- Assessment tools that reveal complex ways how each student is prepared for learning activities in a course,
- Data-guided improvements in curriculum and pedagogy that result in students who have better results from the teaching and learning process,
- Integrative assessment projects that serve to break down silos across human-boundaries and inspire collaboration,
- Assessment to examine equity across all college and university areas, including degree programs, student services, academic supports and business units, and
- Course, program, and institutional level assessment projects that demonstrate you used data to impact student success.
- Strategies to focus appropriately upon those who have been minoritized, excluded, or disadvantaged?
- Approaches to reveal if those desirable new attitudes are occurring?
Presentations should connect assessment data to actions. Successful proposals often go beyond describing processes and provide examples of how you used results to inform institutional decisions and practices. Longer presentations (45 or 90 minutes) are encouraged to address the entire assessment cycle (e.g., Plans, Goals, Assessments, Outcomes, Actions).
Submit Word documents, and include the following sections to be considered:
- Coversheet: Project title as well as the name, title, affiliation, address, telephone, and email information for all presenters.
- Session type: Please see the session type descriptions above. Session categories are full presentation sessions, "one particular idea," sessions, or "How do I assess this?" solution sessions.
- Intended audience: Faculty? Academic Support Personnel? Administrators? Learning and Teaching staff? Assessment Professionals?
- Session title and an abstract of no more than 50 words (for use on the conference website and final program).
- Session description — To be no more than 250 words and include (a) session objectives, (b) institutional impact, (c) the applicability of the information to other institutions, and for hands-on workshops, (d) opportunities for audience participation.
