U.S. institutions of higher education are formulating best practices for how to respond to the increasing need for qualified translators across the country. This is evidenced by the projections of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which foresees a 29 percent increase in employment for interpreters and translators over the 2014–24 decade, and the results of a 2016 survey of the Association of Language Companies, which reports that finding qualified translators represents one of their biggest challenges.
Montclair State University and its new partner institution Université Laval in Québec, Canada, are organizing a conference to reflect on translation pedagogy and curriculum design. The conference will leverage Université Laval’s 50-year expertise in translation pedagogy, which is rooted in Canada’s unique position as an officially bilingual country in North America. Guest speakers from Université Laval will share their expertise and insights into translation pedagogy and curriculum design. Montclair State University will host the event.
This event seeks to serve as a platform of exchange between experienced faculty in the area of translator education and institutions looking to develop their offerings in translation. It will provide a much-needed opportunity for the exchange of ideas and best practices, professional development, and networking.
