The structuring of party pleadings in German civil proceedings has been the subject of legal policy discussion since the 1990s, as a lack of guidelines for the structuring of pleadings poses procedural economy problems. Increasing digitization, e.g., through the introduction of the electronic case file in the judiciary, has further fueled this discussion. In this paper, we outline the legal framework in Germany and other countries and take up various proposals in this regard, in particular that of the working group "Modernization of Civil Procedure." It envisages a basic electronic document as the basis for the presentation of facts in civil proceedings.
