Abstract:
Online learning is a convenient and cost-effective solution for healthcare training. While in-person training has supported mental health practitioners in delivering cognitive health interventions, the need to offer remote, asynchronous training has grown. This study introduces E-Cog, an online platform designed to provide remote cognitive health intervention training, maintaining the quality of in-person training.
E-Cog was developed using the ADDIE educational design model. In the analysis phase, training objectives, target audience, learning needs, and other factors affecting implementation were identified. High-level requirements for the platform were established, including customizability, user experience, data security, accessibility, and gamification. Design focused on structuring learning units, activities, and platform aesthetics. Content creation and web development followed in the development phase. E-Cog’s implementation is part of a multi-site trial across Canada (iCogCA) to deliver cognitive interventions to individuals with psychosis.
Pilot users reviewed the platform before release. A 15-question anonymous user experience survey (Likert scale, 1 to 10) evaluated ease of use, content credibility, aesthetics, and likelihood of future use or peer recommendation. Five pilot users found E-Cog easy to use, with credible content, and rated the likelihood of recommending it at 86%. Eleven therapists have completed training using the platform, and 24 users have completed at least one module. Technical issues were identified and resolved, with ongoing improvements based on user feedback.
E-Cog is a successful tool for remote, asynchronous, and cost-effective training, maintaining the quality of in-person instruction. It offers accessible education in psychological interventions and has the potential to improve patient outcomes while promoting equity and inclusion. Its scalability allows for wider participation among practitioners.
