Abstract:
In this day and age of the Industrial revolution, the scarcity of agricultural land and freshwater for irrigation is causing rising prices and acute shortage of food globally, fueled by conflict, climate shocks and COVID-19. A new agricultural revolution must follow, possibly with the technological advancements of this era. Hydroponic cultivation is a promising alternative. This paper presents a smart Internet of Things (IoT) based greenhouse hydroponics system. The system aims to provide the optimum environment for the crops to grow, achieved by automated constant monitoring of pH levels, temperature and possibly, nutrient levels and various other parameters using sensors connected to an Arduino Uno microcontroller. The IoT integration allows for cloud storage of data on Firebase, remote monitoring and tweaking of parameters like water replacement schedule, pH, temperature, etc. It also provides an ability for inputting specific plant nutrient dynamics data for automation.
