Abstract:
Nowadays Greece, like many other countries, is facing the impacts of global climate change. The aftermath of climate change for Greece over the last decade set a record of the largest and most severe natural disasters. These tragic events served as a reminder of the increasing risks associated with natural disasters in the context of climate change and highlighted the need for better preparedness, prevention and response measures. Quick Risk Estimation tool (QRE) developed by UNDRR in collaboration with EC and Deloitte is an easy to use excel interface diagnostic tool aim to improve awareness. The potential users of the tool include city authorities, city planners, risk officers and emergency response officials. In the context of a laboratory workshop facilitated in HUA, students followed step-by-step instructions on how to use the UNDRR’s QRE tool, manage to identify multiple hazards of various municipalities in the Attica region. Our learnings imply the easy-to-use interface of QRE tool to establish a common understanding of hazards and increase awareness. The limitation is the open-source data used (waste management plans, risk assessments, etc.). Future work proposes comparative analysis with city authorities to comment on our results. Additionally, a QRE tool training workshop and implemenation which will allow city authorities to have a comprehensive understanding of their hazards and opportunities, identify gaps in DRR and resilience, and accordingly develop a Local Resilience Action Plan. The QRE tool sould prove useful to support further the adaption of measures, policies and strategies such as CE, strengthening infrastructure, improving water management, etc. to confront the current and projected impacts of climate change.
