This workshop is an immersive and co-creative experience designed to connect participants with the Samaria Gorge through diverse artistic expressions, exploring its sustainability challenges, and transforming concerns into action. It builds upon the methodology of "Penjant d'un fil" (Hanging by a Thread), a community-based art project initiated in Cala S'Alguer and Espai Mosaik, Barcelona, which used artistic creation to navigate eco-emotions and deepen collective awareness of our relationship with a fragile planet. Then it moves to group creations and discussions about complex challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality. The workshop takes a hands-on creative approach, using collage, clay modelling, drawing and other methods to encourage out-of-the-box engagement with the challenges.
Our purpose is to explore how community-based, imaginative engagement can help to rekindle awareness and foster a sense of community, shared responsibility and protection of such places (essential for the preservation of this environmental and cultural heritage). Through an integrative arts-based workshop, the objective is to promote an open, inclusive space to explore these complex challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality and inspire participants to feel and share grief, hope, and concern for the future of the site. These fantastic places set the stage and allow us to think about how we can make real changes to deal with these problems and explore how we can use the land to test new ideas, listen to the marginalised communities and learn from the land practices and governance models of these territories and the way people live together. Furthermore, it aims to transform the individual's ideas into shared plans, solutions and activities that benefit the community.
The workshop is based on the idea that change begins with awareness and connection. The workshops create a dynamic ecosystem of co-creation by encouraging participants to reflect on their own practices and values and then to share and build on these reflections with others. Also, invites participants to reconsider their role as citizens, and to explore how creativity, empathy, and collaboration can help us meet today's pressing global challenges with resilience and vision. The process values the act of coming together and thinking critically and creatively in a shared space.
