Tracing a Platformed Media System Across Language Lines and Hyperlinks
Over the last fifteen years, YouTube has become the dominant video platform on the web and has evolved from an outlet for short amateur clips to a service that hosts millions of channels producing high-quality content and attracting billions of viewers. This talk takes an exhaustive crawl of 36M+ channel as its starting point, using empirical data to reflect how the site has given rise to a "platformed media system" within its technical and regulatory infrastructures. The thematic focus will be on two aspects: The first line of inquiry asks how countries and languages relate and differ within the larger system. Here, we find a complex picture of media globalization that shows traits of both centralization and decentralization. The second question is how YouTube relates to the web more broadly. Following URLs in video descriptions, we can begin to trace an ecosystem of websites that play central roles in creators’ attempts to promote and monetize their work. Beyond the specific insights these two approaches produce lurks the broader question how the process of platformization plays out in broader terms and what this means for the future of the open web.

The deadline for submitting proposals has been extended to June 7, 2020.
As of today, the organizing committee is still deciding on the final format (on-line, hybrid, etc) and the impact on the organization and registration fees. What is certain is that the conference will be held and the papers will be published. So there is still time to submit your proposal!
About Web Studies
The international conference on Web Studies is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed scientific gathering that investigates the World Wide Web as an object of inquiry. It conceives the Web as an expansive entity: an extended space that reaches every domain of life. Seen from different perspectives and disciplines, the components of the Web can be seized as data structures, algorithmic processes, visual surface, cultural uses, or artistic expressions.
Web Studies was initiated in 2010 and the first conference, WS.1, was organized at Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico). In 2018, the second edition, WS.2, took place in Paris (MSH Paris Nord) and this third edition, WS.3, will be celebrated in Tunisia (Hamamet). Since 2018 the WS conference is organized in cooperation with ACM SIGWEB.
