CALL FOR PAPER :
Founded in 1998, the Young Researchers Meetings of the Doctoral School "Langage et langues" (ED 268, University Sorbonne Nouvelle) offer the possibility for researchers in formation - PhD or Master's degree students - as well as young PhD graduates, to present their works. The theme of this year, "Variation in linguistics: approaches, data and uses" will give the opportunity to deal with numerous aspects in the studies of language.
Linguistic variation is present in several domains of research in language sciences, whether from a theoretical or an applied point of view. It raises numerous questions:
- How to place oneself in regards to the plurality of "variations" in linguistics?
- What can the different interpretations of the terms « variation », « variety » and « variant » be?
- Is variation inevitably linked to a norm?
- How can the methodological or theoretical variants influence the results analysis?
- How to address variation in our data and how can we approach it?
The conception of variation, the representations of varieties, of standardization and the norm are all issues that will be considered. These issues have been already raised by Françoise Gadet (2007) and also by Sonia Branca and Nicole Ramognino (2007) in a special issue of « Langage et Société » titled « Les normes pratiques » ("Practical standards").
All these issues can be addressed and seen in different domains:
- In experimental phonetics, variation is a central issue. As Meunier (2005) clearly stated, phoneticians always agreed that speech is variable. Indeed, although the data collection is realized in spontaneous conditions or controlled in laboratory, speech remains an unstable object of study at several levels: fundamental frequency, intensity, flow, context, prosody, voice quality and expressiveness, inter alia. The possible statutes of this variability have been often discussed, for example during the « Journées d’étude sur la Parole » in 1984, which revolved around the theme of variation and invariance. The highlight of the duality "invariants and variation" could also be the ground for a better comprehension of phonetic variation.
- In diachrony, it is very often a question of reporting the evolution of a language throughout time. We can cite, among others, the work of Marchello-Nizia on French language. In her book “Le français en diachronie : douze siècles d’évolution” (1999) she analyzed a wide range of linguistic processes, from morphosyntactic considerations to phonological observations. Other levels of the DIA-architecture (diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic - or any other order that could be identified, like the diamesic), will be also considered.
- In natural language processing (NLP), we try to establish a systematic processing of often-heterogeneous data. Variations in datasets can be linked to the register of texts, or result from graphic, morphological, syntactic realisations. These variations require developing solutions to detect and categorize them. Current works deal with the search for pre-processing and annotation tools for heterogeneous corpora, as those of Guibon and al. (2016). Normalization is also studied in order to limit the impact of the spelling and morphological variation (Bollmann, 2013). Other researchers try to identify the numerous variations in a corpus, as in a task of dialects detection (Çöltekin, Rama & Blaschke, 2018).
- In translation, if we consider translators above all as reader (Plassard, 2007), their text interpretation will be subjective: this justifies the occurrence of variation during the process of translation of a content.
- As far as teaching-learning of a language-culture, subjects usually face variation issues. The standpoints about linguistic and cultural plurality, the processing of the different levels and registers of language, the hesitation between different linguistic systems concerning inter-language, the evolution of educational programs, textbooks and language politics are some examples of variation.
- In language acquisition, language development varies from child to child, in relation to age and to the communicative strategies exploited, as Kail and Bassano (2000) showed in their works. Although a norm is established, a multitude of practices is however observable. Furthermore, these variations find themselves in typical development as well as in pathological cases. It can be difficult to distinguish variation from a language impairment. Such is the purpose of Claude Chevrie-Muller and Juan Narbona (1996), namely to offer a vast panorama of language acquisition and development and to link it to its pathological counterpart, in order to clear up the very often-subtle differences between these two dimensions of the language.
All these issues will be at the center of discussions on the 22nd edition of the Young Researchers Meeting. The themes presented above are just some examples of possible discussion. We invite you to send proposals concerning all domains and subdomains of language sciences.
