What relationships should we seek to nuture between philosophy and the sciences in the 21st century and beyond? What lessons can be gleaned from collaborations between philosophers and scientists? How can philosophy of science be used to address pressing social problems of concern to the mid-south and "middle states," including the opioid epidemic, the role of coal in the energy crisis, and the future of transportation?
This two-day conference at the University of Kentucky seeks to bring together philosophers and scientists working in the middle regions of the United States in order to foster discussion about these and other topics. Scholars working in any area of philosophy of science or engineering, broadly construed to include the philosophy of medicine and bioethics, as well as adjacent areas of study in the sciences, engineering, and humanistic study of the sciences are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to early-career scholars.
Submission Guidelines
We welcome extended abstracts of 600–1000 words on the theme "Socially Engaged Philosophy of Science." We welcome submissions from any area of philosophy of science, broadly construed and including the philosophy of medicine and bioethics. We especially encourage submissions that seek to investigate the relationship between philosophy of science and the sciences, that result from collaorations with the sciences, that address the role of science in broader social issues, or that employ a regional focus, such as projects on the opioid epidemic or the role of coal in the energy crisis. Collaborative projects are welcome.
